Hi, I'm new to this site and have a Cheney line from Newbury that seems to connect with what you are commenting on, so I thought I'd join and learn from you all. I have John of 1605, to Daniel 1633, to Daniel 1670, to Thomas 1703, to Abigail 1744 of Haverhill and married a Bartlett. Anybody connected here?

I'm a descendant of Humphrey Johnson and Elinor Cheney (daughter of William of Roxbury).  A number of my direct ancestors settled in Roxbury in the early years.  The Johnson family came on the Arbella.

It's always more fun to go research on site. I have a copy of Pope's, too. It is my understanding that William's parents also came to Roxbury and are in some of the records there and that William and Laurence, his father are in the ship's records coming form England to Massachusetts.

I don't work on the early ones too often. There's enough of them in the U S. to keep me busy on them for years.

I deleted my gedcom from WkiTree.  Too many problems working with it and they have no support to contact if you have any problems.  Too bad.  I think they have a cool concept but too many bugs need worked out   I had  downloaded a gedcom for another line of my ancestors and it wouldn't attach to my tree  If I can't get my own ancestors in my tree, I didn't see the point of being on there.

Yes, I've seen Pope's Genealogy, actually have my own copy.  He certainly has a lot of information from England in the front, but none of it definitively connects the Massachusetts Cheneys to the English ones.  Sure wish I could win the lottery and go over and do some on-site research (I know you can do it on computer, but it's much more fun being there lol).  Or maybe there is a rich cousin out there who wants to send me? lol

So glad you started a group for our Cheney family.  I descend from William of Roxbury's son, Thomas.  My mom's maiden name was Cheney. 

Have you ever sen the book, The Cheney Genealogy by Charles Henry Pope?  It si commonly called Pope's Cheney Genealogy?  It has copies of the documents for the English ancestry in it. I think the book may be online now on Ancestry.com or the BYU website under family histories.

You can leave any questions or what oyu're looking for there also. I use my guest book as sort of a message board.

Have you heard of WikiTree yet?  It's a site taht will search through every name on there dn find matches to your ancestors and you can collaborate with others who have common ancestors with you.  I just joined it also adn put my Cheney gedcom on there .  It is by invitation only.  If you want to join it and don't mind giving me your e-mail address, I'll send you an invitation. I am descended from both William and John several times over, but primarily through William of Roxbury.

 

Would love to find PROOF of William's English ancestry.
