As a DAR member, I can also perform Patriot Index lookups, as time permits. I have a full-time day job also, but would be happy to help others.

I am trying to find out for sure if my ancestor Richard DOUGH was a militia member or regular army during the American Revolution. He lived in North Carolina (Roanoke Island and Currituck Co). I have several ancestors who were Rev War soldiers or militiamen and would like to join the DAR at some point. Another ancestor in the same area was also a Rev War soldier,but I was told because I didn't have a burial site that he would not be considered (Willis WICKER). I have a copy of a bounty land warrant which named his son Elijah (my ancestor) and others whom I will assume were Elijah's siblings. I also have information on the date that Willis WICKER mustered in. Do you know if this is something that might be considered by chapter or is this a rule of the DAR at large. Other ancestors that fought in this war were Benjamin GREER and Rowland JUDD. I appreciate any help or advice you can give.

I did not find Richard Dough in the Patriot Index. That does not mean that he didn't serve in the Revolutionary War, it just means the DAR doesn't have anyone who has used him for membership.
Chapters of the DAR can not make changes to the National Rules. I do not know about the criteria to have a burial site. You would have to check with an officer of your local chapter about that.

Thanks very much Nancy. Yes, that is my Benjamin. I guess this info means that both Benjamin and Rowland were militia?

It looks like both were Civil service, I am not sure what you mean by militia. Service criteria for membership is that the ancestor either fought or performed some patriotic service.

No. Militia is considered a military service. According to what Nancy posted, these 2 provided civil service, which is generally the new government...sheriffs, constables, road overseers, general assembly members, etc.

That's not to say that either of these couldn't have served in the militia. But if they did, that service has not yet been proven.

There is also a 3rd type of service recognized by the DAR and that is patriotic service (PS), which constitutes supporting the cause in some way, e.g., I have an ancestor that contributed 600# of beef and another who allowed the army to pasture their horses on his land.

Cynthia, We do not have a burial date or place for my patriot, and my papers were accepted over a year ago. It is not necessary to have a burial site. As long as you have proof of service, and tie to son or daughter and the lineage down to you, that's all that matters. I have found that it is usually the grandchild of the patriot to the child of the patriot that is the hardest to connect, The only thing to beware of is that there may be more than one individual with the same name, and you need to be sure you hook to the proper person. I can help with lookup too plus research work too not a problem. especially if your patriot came out of WV/VA area.

I appreciate your generosity in volunteering to do lookups! I am about to submit my application to join the DAR. I want to use my paternal 5th great-grandfather, Robert Kerr as my patriot! He was born 10 Dec 1726 in Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died 22 Jan 1808 in Augusta, Virginia and was married to Elizabeth Bailey of Wales. Robert Kerr served as a private in Captain Chamber's company, Col. Moses Hazen's regiment, Continental troops. I have this much information on his service but no documents to back it up.

My line of descent from Robert Kerr is as follows: Daniel (b. 1764 in Chester County, PA), Robert (b. 2 May 1791 in Augusta County, VA), Adam (b. 1820 in VA), William Bailey Kerr (b. 1848 in Barbour County, VA), Orville Erry Kerr (b. 15 Dec 1880 in Barbour County, WV) and Earl Fredrick Kerr (b. 18 Sep 1918 in Randolph County, WV), who is my father!

I hope you can help me with any information you can access as I am most anxious to honor Robert Kerr (and all my other ARW great-grandfathers) by becoming a member of the DAR.

Dear Margaret,
I see Robert Kerr listed as patriot in members web site. If this is the same one, they show HIs service as Penn. birth 1720 Scotland, death 1-22-1808 Augusta, Va. married to Elizabeth Bailey. The service they show is as Pvt, Westmoreland Co, Mil and Ranger on the frontier.only 2 members have gone in through son Daniel. the latest was still long ago. , Member # 296329 as supplemental. and it says that her supporting documentation is available. She went through Daniel's son John. I would suggest you go to the DAR.org site, and print out a request for her application. It will cost you $10, and it will tell you what she used as supporting documentation, and you can locate that for Daniel and Robert.You will have to prove your descent through birth, marriage, death certs and census or Bible records to DAniel, then use her proof of Daniel to Robert., but as to proof of service you will be able to copy and use what this member did for proof of service. Your local chapter's registrar can help you get copies of the documentation.

I am looking for information about Asa Geer, b. 11 Aug 1737 d. 1781. He married Rebecca Martin 13 Nov 1764. He was originally in the Connecticut militia, then in the 11th company. I am descended through:
