What do I need to do to become a DAR member? My father's first cousin is a DAR member, and she got in on Hiram Rose, who was a member of the Massachusets Militia. Do I need to verify my relationship to her? I have proof of who my Grandfather is, but I do not have anything but a census record and the written notation that a Bible record existed which showed that my grandfather was a brother of my father's cousin's mother...
Dear Marilyn,
I do not see Hiram Rose in the online database. Do you have a copy of your relative's application papers? If not, you may want to get a copy from her, or request a copy from the DAR ( cost is $10). That will list what she used to prove her lineage. If what she used to prove her father's link to your grandfather listed both her mother and your grandfather, you can use the same proof. You will need to show your lineage to your great-grandfather ( the common ancestor) and can use her proofs from there back. The local DAR chapter will have a Registrar who can help you with the papers and research necessary.
Thank you for the info. Hiram Rose is listed in the Ancestry.com list. He only served for about two months and I have the dates he served, and I believe is was the Mass. Volunteer Brigade. I also have a couple other ancestors that served in the Rev War, but it would be harder to verify my descendancy from them that it would be for Hiram. I can prove my linage to my ggrandfather.
There are a number of Rose's who served from Massachusetts in the Patriot Index, but I don't see a Hiram Rose. Do you have a copy of her papers or know her national number? When did she join? The DAR has gotten stricter about what they will except for proof over the years; so you may or may not be able to link to hers.
At the very least you'll need birth, marriage, and death (for those who have passed on) records for you, your parents, your father's parents and the great-grandparents that you're going through. At least one of these should document the link between generations (e.g., a birth certifcate that name both child and parents).
Thank you for your reply. I will get those things together. I will also try to verify Hiram's service. I have dates but I don't have any hard documents.
There is a Justus Rose in the Patriot Index. He is listed as Civil Service having been an Assessor. The source for this service is cited as "MA GRC Town Official 1775-1783, S1, Vol 238, p. 316." His bio says that he was baptised 22 March 1724 at Durham, New Haven Co., CT and died 25 Sep 1781 at Granville, Hampshire Co., MA. Granville is also listed as having been his residence during the Revolution. His wife's name was Deborah Barlow and it looks like they had at least 4 children: Hiram, Timothy, Lemuel, and Tryphena.
Yu have to prove your relationship to Hiram Rose. Susan is right when you have to see how your cousin proved.
What state do you live in by the way?
