Arlene DeRagon asked me what my source was for the marriage date of François Darragon and Marie Guillemet. I thought that I would post my reply here as a discussion since I am sure others are also wondering. What has been common knowledge is that the parish register for the year 1697 is supposedly *lost*.

A few years back, I had the oportunity to visit the Robarts Library in Toronto. This library is a part of the University of Toronto. At Robarts, I found yet another edition of the "Réportoire des Mariages de l'Île d'Orléans" (I know of 3 editions now - the other two I found in the Ottawa Public Library). This new edition that I found is another transcription of the original parish register and was published in 1966. There were two editions published in 1966 - one copy by The "Société Canadienne de Génealogie", Québec and the other published by "Le Centre de Génealogie S.C." Ottawa, Ontario. A third copy of the register was published as a second edition in 1984 (by the Quebec Society).

It was the copy by the Ottawa Society that had the actual marriage date. I have attached the page here for everyone, as well as the cover page.

What does everyone think? Could this be the real marriage date of the first ancestor?

Thank you, Michelle:
The explanation and confirmation of the marriage date for Francois Daragon and Marie Guillemet is definitely believable. Prior to this the only date that we found was a hand written "avant le 29 juillet 1697" that we received in a letter from the cure at St. Jean, Ile d'Orleans in 1982. We were told that the marriage register for the year 1697 at St. Jean had been lost.

A "Notary Vente - 26 Juillet 1697" by Notary Louis Chambalon (page 190 1st part) confirmed that Francois Daragon was the son-in-law of Nicolas Guillemet and Marie Celle. Quote: "Nicolas Guillemet et Marie Celle de St.Jean, I.O., a Francois Daragon, leur gendre, du meme lieu, de 1 1/2 arpentpris sur leur habitation de 5 arpent x moitie de'Ile."

Every source that I have come across over the years has said that the records for 1697 were lost so I was quite surprised that this particular book had a day and month included. I have attached here the preface to this particular edition which explains where the editors retrieved their data, namely from duplicate copies of the original register. Although I find it strange that only one book has the original marriage date in it, I too think that it is credible.

The year is the same as the one I have.
Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles du Quebec. Rene Jette 1983.
Does it have them married in St Jean, Ile de Orleans, Quebec Canada?
I will not quibble over the month so I am on board.
Yes, it has the marriage place at St-Jean, l'Île d'Orléans.
