I have 2 Davis lines.  (1) Thomas was born about 1720 and Benjamin about 1743 in VA > Aaron b. bef 1774 and his daughter Mary Allis b. 1807 in NC.  Surnames in this line include: Pate, Rutherford, Brunson (paternal grandmother), and again Davis in GA, AL, and TX.

(2) My other Davis line begins with my brickwall, Aaron T. in GA with his birth on 5/22/1826.  His son, Elias, and grandson, John Aaron (paternal grandfather) were born in AL and both moved to TX.  Surnames include Pate and Bond.

Family lore has always had it that my paternal grandparents (John Aaron Davis and Lee Ann Brunson)  were related.  And supposedly, "the families" were quite upset when they married.  We have searched for years to find that family that joins these two lines.  I may have solved to puzzle.  PATE appears to be that family

Lee Ann, d/o Cynthia Rutherford,  was Mary Allis Davis Rutherford's granddaughter.

  • Cynthia's brother (Lee Ann's uncle), John A, married Thursey Pate.  Thus, Alexander Pate, Thursey's father, became Lee Ann's great uncle by marriage.
  • Alexander Pate was the brother-in-law of Aaron T. Davis (married Thursey's aunt Rachel Pate), and thus John Aaron's great uncle.
  • The children of John A and Thursey Pate Rutherford would have been Lee Ann Brunson's first cousins and John Aaron Davis' second cousins.

Doubt if our ancestors differentiated much between blood kin and in-laws.  Most probably thought, as I use to, if X is your cousin and you are my cousin then X must be my cousin too.  They had family in common and in the same area.

Any comments from Davis researchers - anny corrections or additions?.
