I wonder what records exist that would enable us to document the marriages and children of the families. I think my ancestor Joseph Peavler was actually the son of Ulrich Beeler. I'd like to find the last name of Ulrich's wife (if possible). Joseph married Mary Ann Ridge and I think it's likely that her family was in this community too. Thank you.

A few years ago, I read a journal that had marriages and deaths for the Watauga area. It was on the internet, but I am not sure it is still there, or if I can find where I saved the URL to this journal. I read the whole thing, and it was inconsistent, but at least it was something. I would try finding church records in the area.
Findagrave.com has some interesting information. For example
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=SM&GS...;
I looked at that site and have seen similar info on others but they don't list their sources. A name without a source is a clue but not acceptable as proof. Any other ideas?
The McClung Library in Knoxville has papers and applications on members of First Families of Tennessee. This is a part of the East Tennessee Historical Society. I went once but was looking for something specific with a limited amount of time. I'd love to go back and search through these papers for more info. Has anyone else done this?
I'm having this kind of trouble, too. My seventh great-grandfather lost his wife a few months before he removed to the Watauga Settlements. By the time he passed away, he mentioned a Jemima Douglas as his wife in his Will. I forget what he wished to leave to her. I've tried searching over at Ancestry.com, where my main family tree resides, but I keep coming up empty. It's my understanding Douglas was her married name, and I read somewhere that that was the name she married my seventh great-grandfather under. I hate brick walls, and this one surely is.
Other family trees (presumably by relatives of mine) suggest the two were wed 25 December 1773, which is the date they arrived at the Settlements. But, since I can't find the woman in the Colony of Virginia, I'm left to scratch my head.
