Peter Doyle

My 2x great grandfather, Peter Doyle, was born in Wicklow, between 1839 and 1842, depending on which record you believe (census records, obituary, cemetery stone).  His parents according to his marriage record are John Doyle and Bridget Maher. I have found a John Doyle married to a Bridget Maher in Clonegal,Carlow/Wicklow but not his baptismal record -- although there are gaps.   His parents according to family history are John Doyle and Mary Furlong.  He apparently joined the merchant marine or Royal Navy as a blacksmith, but I have not found this record yet (suggestions?).  He arrived in southern Ontario about 1872 and married Ellen McGuire in 1873 in Centreville, Camden East, Ontario.  With so many possibilities, I'm not sure where to go next.
