Black sheep Elliott need clarification please help

richard Isaac Elliott is my grandfather, according to the 1930 census he was born in North Carolina in 1885. He was shot in Florida during prohibition and was paralyzed on one side. According to my father, he had some family problems and did not want his family contacted at his death in 1936. He had reported that he had killed his brother. He had moved all around for years prior to marrying my grandmother. We are certain he lived in Iowa, Florida, and Georgia. He stated he had lived in almost every state. Please help me with this problem.
