Why not introduce yourself and anounce your interests here.

I guess I should start. My KISBY, FOVARGUE, BLUNT and BAINES ancestors lived around the Cambridgeshire town of Whittlesey, not far from Peterborough. My Great x 4 grandfather Charles KISBY married in Whittlesey in 1809, was an agricultural labourer and died aged 56 in 1829. Where he came from I've yet to find out.

I don't live nearby, unfortunately, but have visited the area on several occasions, most recently in July 2008 when I explored the towns of Boston, Spalding and March. When I first visited Whittlesey I actually met someone in the toen museum that was related to me. It must be a small place!

Im Rick DEXTER and Im doing a one-name study on my surname -- DEXTER. It is primarily a midlands surname especially in the LEI/NTT/DBY border areas. But there are a significant number in NFK and adjacent areas. Im wondering why? I would like to hear from anyone who has an interest in the surname and might have some theories?

David Dexter, who has registered the surname at the 'Guild of One Name Studies', says that DEXTER is also a known anglicisation of a Dutch surname, DYKSTRA.There were significant numbers of Dutch and Walloon immigrants to East Anglia at the time when the Fens were being drained (the Dutch are experts in that sort of thing!). Maybe the Norfolk Dexters were originally Dutch?

I also have Walloon ancestry, mine settled in the Cambridgeshire Fens in the early 1600's.

Could it be because we use the x in names instead of tch eg Thaxter and Baxter ?

My name is Claire Whyman and I have been tracing my Wooding ancestors in Northampton and have got back to William Wooding born about 1771 in Woodnewton in Peterborough which is in the Fenlands. He married and lived in Fotheringhay and was an Ag. Lab. Any assistance with the Woodings in this region would be a great help.

According to the data on 'FreeReg', Benjamin and Sarah WRAY were living in Holbeach (Lincs., but near Wisbech) in 1833, where they baptised a son William.

I have, most at very early stages of research, the following
At present I am unable to engage in much in the way of exchange of trees but thought I would post these to see if they rang bells and to say hi.
Hall from Southery migrating to the Sixteen Foot Stonea/Wimblington area, Hilgay/Littleport/ Black Horse Drove fens and Upwell
Piggott and Youngs ( with an s) at Southery ( just discovered)
Lucas from Wentworth / Haddenham area ( just a name so far)
Kirby from Wilburton ( ditto)
Short from March area ( originally from Warmington/Thurning Northants)
Angood from Chatteris
Dring Chatteris
Skeels Chatteris
Boyden ( Chatteris but from Wimbotsham)
Morris ( Fleet, Whaplode, Gedney area, lived also in Edenham near Bourne, Twenty and beside the 16 Foot at Stonea but earlier ancestors coming from Crowland- I am particularly interested if any one
can link Whittlesey Morris family with Crowland/Fleet family and the naming of Morris Fen. )
Mason- Baston/Tongue End area
Larrington ( Fleet/Gedney)
Most of these were ag labs/horsemen/farmers except the Angoods and their associated Chatteris families who were also at some time builders/bricklayers/brickmakers .
