History of Cape Cod

In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold named it Cape Cod, the surviving term and the ninth oldest English place-name in the U.S. Samuel de Champlain charted its sand-silted harbors in 1606 and Henry Hudson landed there in 1609. Captain John Smith noted it on his map of 1614 and at last the Pilgrims entered the "Cape Harbor" and – contrary to the popular myth of Plymouth Rock – made their first landing near present-day Provincetown on November 11, 1620. Nearby, in what is now Eastham, they had their first encounter with Native Americans.

Cape Cod was among the first places settled by the English in North America. Aside from Barnstable (1639), Sandwich (1637) and Yarmouth (1639), the Cape's fifteen towns developed slowly. It is in these fifteen towns on this small peninsula that many of the United States early colonial families settled, worked, and eventually (in some cases) spread out to other colonies.

Families 'Round the Cape invites you to share your genealogical findings, discuss topics of interest and history, and help us plot the trees of our common ancestors.

Am interested in anyone researching the families that start at the 8th generation, I see a number of errors, I do not see any contact info. If anyone is searching these families and would like to exchange data please let me know. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~database/Freeze%20Family%20Ahnentafel.html

Hi James, thanks for pointing that out. Her birth is 1880, oops. Here is her headstone and the cemetery placement card with her two different names:

Spirit, are you sure about the dates for Danena? She would have been 149 years old when she died, not to mention she was 44 years younger then her husband. These are unusual.

I am in a pickle over this woman: unknown, Danena Lena. Everyone on Ancestry lists her as Lena Doane. Doane is her married name, Lena is the name she used. Her given name is Danena unknown. Born 1830 Canada, died 20 Feb 1979, Brewster. Married Herbert W Doane, born 1874 ,Barnstable, died 1943 Brewster. They had a daughter they adopted, I don't know if it was a legal adoption, Gertrude (Rowell?) Doane 1901 – 1987 birth place unknown, died Brewster. No children of their own. Gertrude never married or had children.
Does anyone have any ideas how to find out where Danena came from, her surname or info about Gertrude? Everyone is coping everyone on Ancestry and I'm trying to get the facts straight esp when the Doane Family is my family and I don't want nonsense on my family website for history reasons.
Thanks,
Spirit

Hello cousin Spirit

Yes, there appears to have been at least a few marriages between the Doanes and Coles (and Snows). I have a Hepzibah Cole marrying Daniel Doane about 1664 in Barnstable and a few other marriages within the families.

Dear Cousin William,
I have a question. I am trying to download and then place a copy of this on Ancestry.com, property info for Eastham: Thomas Mayo, Nathaniel Mayo, Samuel Mayo Division Of Land Of Nathaniel Mayo.
Keeps stating this doc is corrupt and everything is in Chinese. I had issues with the Doane doc too but was able to fix it but this one I can't.
Are you able to do something better than me? I would like to save this to my tree.
Oh, Thought just came to me, print it out, scan it and I can place it on Ancestry, and keep a copy on hand and my files, duh.

Thank you Cousin William, this is what I found so far from the link you shared:
Elisha and Hannah Cole Doane sold land to Joseph Atwood. Mentions of Samuel Hamelton, Daniel Hamelton, Thomas Hamelton, Elisha Hopkins, William Nickson, Thomas Doane, Stannah Doane, Rachel Doane, Hope Doane.
I posted it on Ancestry.com under Elisha and Hannah Cole.
