The online resources of Familysearch.com are definitely invaluable and I often use them myself, particularly the IGI which has been around for years. And I use their PAF software. Long may it all continue!!
But as far as I understand it, Familysearch is a product of the LDS Church. I can understand there is a religious imperative for them to record baptisms and marriages ...so that explains the IGI. But can anyone explain what drives the LDS Church to provide all these additional free genealogical resources - libraries, census transcripts, new extended Familysearch Beta, Wiki's etc.? Why does the LDS Church have such a unique passionate zeal for all things genealogical? Among other things it must cost them a small fortune (and thousands of hours of time) to make all these things happen!
