I'm not all that great on the computer and I have this fear I'll lose all my history on Family Tree. What can I do, and how do I do it? Can I get all my info out of there? Dianne
Each version has a File, Back Up command. I suggest you us it, and use it frequently. Back Up do CDs from time to time, but at least use the File Back up command to your Hard Drive more frequently. The frequency would depend on how much work do you really want to re-do.
If you do a lot of work in one session, back up to your Hard Drive. Later in the week you do more work and back up to your Hard Drive (C). At the end of the week, after a couple of days of hard work, Back that file up to a CD.
Three other things to consider, 1) Send a copy of the CD somewhere else, to a family member for safe keeping, 2) Use an Online Back Up service, and 3) do a Restore from Back Up from time to time. I do a File, Restore from Back up on my CDs every once in a while.
Thanks Russ. I had seen the backup on that, because I had compacted files, but was thinking if the computers breaks will I be able to get my history out. I did do the back up like you said. Thanks a lot. Dianne
Make sure that you Back Up to somewhere besides to the PC, like a CD. The program will help you with that. You want a copy of your Back Up OFF of that computer, just in case.
Backing up to the C Drive (your computer) is OK, but every once in a while, Back Up to a CD.
You can post your family tree data on Ancestry.com. They do not require you to purchase a membership although you will get much more out of the site if you choose to do so. Once your tree is uploaded to Ancestry is will remain there until you remove it.
I belong to Ancestry. Do you do each family name seperate? I tried once to do that. I live in a rural area without access to high speed which makes it difficult. If not impossible. I will try again. I tried several months ago and the computer crashed trying to do it. Thanks that's a great idea. hope I can get it done. diannA
Posting on Ancestry becomes a "back up" if anything does happen to your PC, as long as you upload your tree from time to time. With Version 2010, this whole process is easier.
