Old version FTM with a patch for windows 7 ??

Jo,

The answer is "not really". You can make Version 2006 or Version 16 run on Windows 7, but you may have issues. Please remember that Version 16 and earlier was based on DOS. The real issue in Version 11, 2005, 2006, and 16 is a third party application to generate a PDF file.

If you look at the People Workspace, Family View, you ARE looking at the Family Group, it just has the pedigree at the top of the screen. In 2006 that is Two Screens.

Have you looked at any of the Tutorials hat are available?

Which version do you now have?

I have used Family Tree Maker since Version 3.4 and I find that FTM2012 is far more powerful and less mouse clicks to get around.

I have to go in and look at it again, it has been a while since I have delt with it, I just read somewhere that if you like your program and don't want all the "improvements"  to look for a "patch". As i remember to add children you need to click somewhere at the top and after it entered the child, then click someplace else th o enter the BD etc. I just like to see it as i go like the older version.  When I went to enter the next child it entered it under the child I had just entered, I saw my mistake several children down the line, and I keep forgetting you can't just enter one after the other. I have seen the tutorials, it isn't that i "can't work it,  It's that I don't like the format, I don't like the cluttered page and all the clicking around to get things on there.

What kind of issues would I have? Maybe they are issues that I can deal with.

Jo,

The biggest issue is that it Won't run.

In the People Workspace, you can add all of the children. That's why its the People Workspace.

There are TWO views on the People Workspace, the Family View and the Person View. The Family View gives you both the Family Group that you are looking at AND a Pedigree View of the selected persons ancestors.

When you want to enter data about a Person, you want the Person Tab, in the People Workspace.

Ok I see that but the view doesn't show where the children were born, it is all about the person rather than about the couple and their children. I like the pedigree display it is nice and big and easy to read, the person view is small font and isn't in a chart form and is just not what I like and what I "signed up for" when I got my first FTM, I think the changes may be an improvement to some. I think it is a matter of what i prefer to look at and work with, and I can see I can pout and stomp my foot all I want to but I am not going to have my way. Maybe some day they will revert back to that nice simple version they once had, maybe for people like me. I think I have an answer, I can buy a laptop with XP on it for my old FTM:)

Jo,

From the People Workspace, Family View, if you Select the Child you want 'more information on", there, the additional details will appear on the Right. It's not ALL of the Facts, but more information is there AND you can customize that.

OK, just make sure it's NOT a 64 bit PC.

I am really sorry that you don't like the current version of Family Tree Maker. I do think it's easier navigating around, entering information, at using the information that you put into the file.

Hi Jo,

If you don't like the People view because it's too cluttered, you can resize or close the panes that you don't need/want. But you are right, you can't just step through the input fields like you used to.

Be aware that if you are going to revert to Windows XP that you will lose Microsoft support in 2014. At this time Microsoft is only releasing security vulnerability fixes, but that will stop in 2014, at which point your PC will become vulnerable to virus attacks, as well as other vendors software will also more than likely no longer be supported.

If you don't like the newer version of FTM, you might want to look at some of the other products on the market today, some of which are free. Most of the others don't cost very much.

Al, if you don't go on line can you still get a virus? The cost of the program isn't the issue i would gladly pay double what the newer versions cost if i could have the old one back.

Hi Jo,

It's true that if your PC isn't connected to the Internet that it can't get a virus from that connection, but it can still get a virus when other disks or flash drives are inserted into it. However, the fact that you are communicating on this website, means that you are connected to the Internet, and are therefore vulnerable to attack. Attack vectors include just being connected, web browsing, e-mail, social networks, advertising, instant messaging, gaming, sharing files, CDs/DVDs, etc. Even if you don't go to unknown websites, you are still at risk because any website can be hacked, and most websites have ads on them, which has been a favorite of hackers for a long time. You don't even have to click on the ad, just having it loaded is good enough, especially if your software, operating system, and anti-virus/malware signature files are out of date. And even then, you are still at risk from a day zero attack. The only truly secure computer is the one that is powered off, unplugged and sitting in your closet.

The best way to avoid a virus is to keep all of your software and operating system up to date. Ensure that you have a firewall on your PC and that it's running. The firewall that comes with Windows is adequate, but if you are directly connected to the Internet, make sure that it's set for a connection to the public Internet /network. Use a good anti-virus program (I like the Avast Free edition; http://avast.com/) and keep the signature file updated (which should happen automatically as long as the software is registered). Secunia PSI (also free; http://secunia.com/) is a good program to run on your PC to insure that all of your software is up to date. It will inform you when a program has a vulnerability and that a new version is available. When you run Microsoft update (which should be configured to automatically update) always check for optional updates and apply those as well.
