Family Tree Maker Knowledge Base Websites

In an effort for us to help each other with the Family Tree Maker program, PLEASE use the + Start Discussion link, below the Discussion Forum below. Please use a descriptive Subject Line and provide details for us to help each other.

Please do not Add a Comment for the purpose of seeking help or to ask questions.. The, don't forget to turn ON the FOLLOW link at the end of the Discussion so that you will receive an email notification that someone replied to that Discussion. You can also Stop Following that Discussion, if you so choose.

New Comments about the overall purpose of this Group are Welcome, but handling the Issues / Problems / Questions, for all of us, is easier using the +Start Discussion feature.

Its helpful to provide the Product Version Number (Help, About Family Tree Maker), the version of Windows that you are using, and details of any Error Messages that you may see (IF you are having a problem). But, provide us with some details of the problem.

To help, please continue to read below for other online help that is available to us (Users of the Family Tree Maker program.

There are a number of places to receive help with the Family Tree Maker Program. If you have the program already, the Help that is supplied with the program is not bad and should be looked at before going to any of the below resources. As you work with the program, the help that is offered is more focused on where you are in the program.

Here are links to the Family Tree Maker Knowledge Base Websites (Online Help Center):

In using the Keyword Search, use one or two keywords for that search. For example, if you have an error message, a key word that you might use, is one of the words in the Error Message.

Family Tree Maker Version 2008 and 2009

There is an Online Video for Version 2009 here:

Family Tree Maker 2009 Feedback Website:

If you use this link, please provide some detailed feedback to Family Tree Maker 2009. You will probably not receive feedback from them, but the developers do read the feedback.

Family Tree Maker Version 2005, 2006 and Version 16

Earlier Version of Family Tree Maker

There are a number of User to User Message Boards. This first link will take you to a list of Family Tree Maker GenForums based on the problem that you are trying to resolve:

When posting a message on any of these message boards, it is MOST HELPFUL to mention the Version of Windows that you are using, and the Version of Famliy Tree Maker that you are uisng. You can determine that by clicking on Help, then About Family Tree Maker. That will help the Users help you.

It is also helpful to be specific as to what the issue is or the question is, based on what you see in Family Tree Maker. If there is an Error Message, please provide the specific Error Message. What you see and what you expect to see is also helpful.

Stacy,

Version 2010 will download the Images that you have on Ancestry.com.

Stacy,

How much difference is your Ancestry.com tree and the Tree in Family Tree Maker?

Does your Ancestry.com tree have any images in that tree?

What version of Family Tree Maker are you using? If you are using Version 2009 and if there is a lot of difference between the two trees AND there are no images online, I would back up my Family Tree Maker file, download the Ancestry.com tree then Merge the two files. Then upload the new merged file to Ancestry.com as a New Member Family Tree.

IF there ARE images on Ancestry.com, then I would wait for Version 2010, as it includes images in the Download from Ancestry to Family Tree Maker.

I am waiting for my copy of 2010 to verify that it works as I think it is going to work. I will be blogging about this feature as I have responded to a number of Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker message board about this issue.

Stacy,

Is your question about posting a Family Tree on Genealogy Wise?

I do try to address stuff here on the Family Tree Maker Fan Group, but some things I have already posted on my Blog outside of Genealogy Wise. Most of the Help for the Family Tree Maker program is also outside of Genealogy Wise.

If there is something you would like help with, on the Family Tree Maker program, please start a new Discussion.

If the posting of a tree on Genealogy Wise is what you are looking for, there is a Group here for that as well. I think it's a great idea.

Thanks Russ and Joel for trying to resolve this in an adult like manner. This is a learning process and we are all in learning mode. Differences of opinion are ok.

Joel,

You make a very good point -- I have complained about some of these issues elsewhere. BUT, what I CAN do, is to make the Start a new Discussion more obvious in the Information at the top of the page.

Please give me a little while and check back to see if it makse more sense.

Thank you --- Russ

I agree that it is difficult/confusing to start a new discussion. I didn't even realize you could do that here until I scrolled up and looked under "Discussion Forum" and, sure enough, there it is -- "Start Discussion". GW should definitely make that more obvious. Then we wouldn't have sprawling pages and pages of comments under one huge catchall topic called "Comment Wall".

Joel -- Thank you. I will take yous suggestion under consideration.

I guess, my thought, is that there are already a lot of resources for the Family Tree Maker program. Each of them has search capabilities and have been around for a while. When Genealogy Wise came online, my thought was, just to respond HERE if there wasn't something already online out side of Genealogy Wise. Please consider the resources in the Group information posted at the top of the Group Information.

I have planned, and you can ready see some Discussions that I started, that are NOT Out side of Genealogy Wise.

But, I will take your comments when responding or posting a new discussion.

The real issue here, for me, is that My Suggestion is the Problems be started with a New Discussion. There are 4 pages of responses here, that it's difficult to line of a Question / Problem / Post with a response to that problem. If a New Problem were started as a New Discussion, It's easier to Follow or Unfollow the Discussion.

I find the Genealogy Wise set up a little confusing. If I see a Reply, like the email I received when you posted the reply, I have to come here, find your reply to respond to is.

I to take "ownership" of this Group, in that I will reply to each message that I should be responded to. But, on other Genealogy Wise Groups, I have to return to the group to see what was said. I should be able to see something in the email that gives an indication about what the reply is. I shouldn't have to come here to see it (other groups, not this one). Yes, I have made comments to several Genealogy Wise groups about this issue.

Thank you for your feedback.

Well, if someone asks a question here, I think it should be answered here. Just my personal opinion.. you can do whatever you want, of course. The problem that forwarding someone outside GenealogyWise creates is that when people search inside GW, they won't get the answers they're looking for, they'll just get pointers to places outside GW. I don't see how that helps build the community.

Like I said... just my personal opinion.

Joel,

I am NOT trying to advertise my blog and I am sorry that you feel that way. I think what you are asking me is to double post the blog information, on on my exiting Blog and the second one here.

That blog was created so that I could help Family Tree Makers with issues / problems with the Program.

Are you suggesting that I double post them?

Russ, your recent comments seem to be advertisements for your blog. If you have an answer, why don't you post it here rather than trying to redirect everyone to your blog?

I believe the intent of GenealogyWise is to create a community of users and contributors, not for you to get more blog readers so please chill out on using us and this group as your marketing medium.

Thanks,
Joel
