I had a similar experience. I found the address of 2 of my grandfathers sisters in Norway, amongst my grandmothers belongings after they passed. I wrote to both of them and got nothing. 6 weeks later I wrote to each of them again, this time I got an answer, one of my relatives worked in the Post Office at Hoffstad, Norway and gave my letters to someone in the family who could read English, seems the sisters were both dead, thus the failure to reply. I got acquainted through the mail with several family members, Grandpa was the only member who immigrated to the USA. I flew to Norway in 1988 and met 115 cousins, visited the family cemetery, got piles of photos, both old and new, and my direct ancestral line back to the 1500's. Not to mention being treated like royalty by the cousins. I still write one Jul letter in Norsk to all of them every year, as well as my English version over here. I am now exchanging notes on Facebook with the next generation of Norwegian teenage cousins and getting their photos on the site as well. I agree.NEVER GIVE UP.

What great stories!!! I posted quieries on Roostweb message boards under family last names. Out of those I have received 2 family bibles in our lines (one on my husbands side and 1 on my side) that people had and it wasn't even their families. Those were also full of dates and information. You just never know :)

That is awesome! I have found that when I hit a wall and move on to another branch I can usually find a tid bit that will lead me back to the wall and to remove another brick!
