Thanks Dawn, you got me off the hook with Eric, I will watch what develops with you two.
Dawn, my apologies. I thought that's what you meant when you said, "There are sites to sell photos, AND IF I FIND MY WOK ON THEM I DO REPORT IT. Sharing fine, selling, nope!" I'm very aware of the copyright laws and how they work and didn't say you shouldn't protect your work. The topic was whether photos volunteered in the name of genealogy are up for grabs or not.
My apologies, I didn't know I should have been posting to a discussion board instead of here. What is the purpose of the comment wall, then? What goes here instead of in a discussion? I posted one thing and when people started chatting with me, I thought that's what this was for.
I'm like Shirley...anything I volunteer in the genealogy world is up for grabs, no credit necessary. I'm not out for fame and fortune when it comes to genealogy. Any picture, document or information I post on the internet is fair game for anyone to use any way they see fit. If I don't want it used, I don't put it there. I have my own TNG website for my family tree and there are certain items there that only people who join can see. Even then, if it's there, I expect that they'll use it in their family trees, without my permission and without giving me credit. To me, genealogy is a world-wide cooperative effort and not about who took what photo. It's not Time magazine.
As far as copyrights, one doesn't need to file ANYTHING for a copyright to be valid. The moment you take a photo, you own the copyright to it. Formally filing for a copyright only gives you ammunition if you need to pursue copyright infringement. To do that, you need to file a lawsuit. I'm not sure who you're reporting people to, Dawn, there's no copyright police for photos.
No you dont have to use the copyright and you can always waive the copyright. When people publish my work, I do ask that they give credit for the time it took me to take the photo
As for the gas thing, lately I have had to curve how often I go out because it is getting a little out of hand $$$ wise. If it is an older cemetery, with old unstable gravestones, I have to leave the car running with my 14 yr old watching the little ones, so cant really afford that lately. Any hobby is expensive, I have two professional "hobbies" that cost a lot. One hobby was to pay for gas to continue my volunteer work for F.A.G
