Thanks everyone for your great ideas. I know next time I go to a cemetery I will be well prepared!

For Blake - power washers are a no no. There is too much pressure and it will damage brittle slates or marble stones which tend to be softer anyway. Not sure how granite will react.

I carry what everyone else has mentioned. I also have a mirror in my car which helps illuminate stones in the shade or not facing the sun. I use one of those pump type sprayers used for fertilizer or weed killer (with only water of course).

I always carry my camera and stuff. Sometimes I just go to a graveyard and take photos if I need a little "self time". I have a 86 year old MIL that we take care of and sometimes I just need to get away.

I carry my digital camera in my purse all the time around town. But when we are going out and about I take the small camera case with extra batteries and memory cards. I have one that is for cemetery's only. I photographed the entrace post with the name on it before doing any tombstones. That way if I photograph more than one cemetery I will know which is which.

I live in south Alabama and am willing to take photos for people with ancestors in my local area,

Yep, you can't forget the batteries. All that other stuff isn't going to do you a bit of good if your batteries are dead!

I visited a cememtery that sits alongside the Red River between Minnesota and North Dakota. Even though it lies at least twenty feet above the normal water level it was flooded last spring. The current carried in silt and any grave marker that lay below the level of the grass received a thick layer of dirt. Nothing in the tool kit helps. I am hoping the fire department takes a tanker truck out and hoses away the silt. Until then, no photos.

Good one Kelly!
More than once I have been shooting away and the camera shuts down - the battery is gone. I have an extra battery, charged up, and in the car as well.

Also, don't forget extra batteries for your camera. I was going through batteries like crazy so changed to lithium batteries which last a long time. I even have my old digital camera in the car as a standby. I use about the same tools as everyone else.
