Dixie, you comment about understanding FAG's History is spot on.  I can think of a host of ideas that would make FAG a much more dynamic and useful site for genealogists.  It truly is a very useful site and one of my top genealogy sites.  However, knowing it's history and purpose explains a lot and is often overlooked and under appreciated.

I'm sorry but I have found many news sites who absolutely prohibit the use of their copyrighted obit. I can accept FAG for what it is and what it is is inaccurate in some instances. I have found not only living people listed as dead but also people listed in a cemetery that are not even there. Also one of the memorial for a living person was created within the past month. It is easy to assume this person is dead as she is 103 years old.

Perhaps the best thing to do for people who want a site where they can memorialize family members is for someone like Ancestry.com to create that service. There obviously is a need.

Leonard, it sounds like you are relatively new to FAG and may not realize for the majority of FAG's history, "pre-need memorials" (for living people) were allowed as long as there was a marker in the cemetery.  The rule has been changed but the previously entered "pre-needs" do not have to be removed.  If the person is creating new memorials, follow the procedure in the FAQs (send SAC, wait 30 days, forward to Edit) to have them removed.

As far as the "personal memorials" you suggested; that is not going  to happen.  FAG is a graves registration site. Registering graves is the "spirit of the site". It is not a genealogy site. Accept the site for what it is, rather than what you want it to be. Otherwise, you are going to find yourself being very frustrated.

Leonard Smith....cutting and pasting obits if used for personal reasons is not violating copyright.  I don't think obits can be sold on the street, and nobody but a relative would want a copy anyway.  When I find a FAG grave picture of a cherished relative's gravesite and tombstone that someone else has put there, I merely add flowers and comments.  That makes it as much mine as theirs.  Then I copy the obit (it doesn't leave the site) and paste it into my gedcom.

Betty Jo...I don't think you can do much in this case.  These people have been put on FAG by another relative most likely and if not, then someone who means well and thinks they're doing the family a favor.  If they're not relatives then where did they get the names of the living survivors?  Be glad that future descendants will be able to look them up on FAG.  The cemetery has no control over this sort of thing, by the way.  Cemeteries are on public property unless they're designated otherwise.

These people who are after a body count are more than annoying. In my local cemetery there are memorials created for living people and I have notified the creator about this and he will not take them down. We also have guys who cut and paste obits in clear violation of copyright laws.

Regarding personal memorials for family members, I think the best solution to that is a change of policy that allows a person to create a memorial for a family member, even if it is a duplicate. It can be identified as a personal memorial and made public or restricted. I would even be willing to pay a reasonable to do so.

Now, I think the people who violate the spirit of FAG as well as the guidelines should be banned.

Still having problems with one person at our local cemetery who refuses to transfer my aunt and cousin to me. I added pictures of their headstones and sent him information as to dates of their births and deaths, family information and he wouldn't even add that information. Contacted FindaGrave and they have not responded and its been since July.

I also notified them of a person who is copying the whole obituary with picture to area cemeteries and again some who my relatives. I wasn't even able to put what the family had agreed to put on. They even listed the living survivors which the family didn't want listed. Again I was refused having my relatives transferred to me. These people just want big numbers after their names.

Any further suggestions on what to do.

I've found more information on Findagrave than just about anywhere.  It's a wonderful site.

Betty, only thing you can do is use Edit@findagrave.com Tell them your problems, 30 day waiting time.

Dear Addicts--Does anyone have experience with dealing with a cemetery that is being impossible? I'm in Florida. A large cemetery here will no longer provide volunteers with gravesite locations. They force the person requesting the photo to call the office to get the location to give to the FAG volunteer. They've recently banned photo taking in the cemetery. It's a private cemetery; however, the people requesting that the volunteer take the photos are related to the people buried in the graves. This situation has been going on for about a year now. It's getting worse and it's escalating. Volunteers are zipping into the cemetery early in the morning to do a few photos and get out undetected. Can anyone offer advice?
