Have you considered that Flavius might have originally been a middle name?  Often back then people considered first and middle names interchangable.

No, I didn't think about that.  I have seen his marriage record on the Warrick County, IN (fantastic) web page by Marsha.  I also found a divorce between a 'Flavious' and a Mary M. Fisher in September 1883.  I also saw an 'Alvis' and checked that out as well...still a dead end!  I found out too that he owned 40 acres of farmland in Lane Township of Warrick County, IN (1880 assessor's map)...there were (2) other Fishers' with property near there as well...A.M Fisher with 33 acres and Lawrence H. Fisher with 30 acres...I was hoping perhaps they were brothers, but nothing clicks yet!  I am soooo happy to even get a response to my question...THX!!!!  Jacque

 

I have a copy of the pension card too...it doesn't list a widow, but he wasn't married until 1871...I'll have to figure out what all those numbers mean...it's such a bizarre name...I thought this one would be easier than most!

This is often the case with family names that are re-used by multiple people in the same family (that is, if there are three other Obediahs, someone might use his middle name or baptismal name).  Yet the name is unusual.  In your shoes I would start investigating some of these other Flavius Fishers who are obviously not him (wrong ages, other states, etc) and see if there is a common ancestor.  This has worked for me with a few brick walls.

I found him in the 1880 census.  There is also a listing int he 1880 county land ownership maps and there is a trail for a man by that name in Civil War records.  Consider getting a copy of his pension file--those are often loaded with great information including letters, biographical info, etc.  I just found an 1870 census listing for a "Flavous Fisher" (born abt 1858) living in Jasper Iowa with parents Elijah and Kezzeia but that doesn't seem to match up with the right person, given that in the 1880 census (the one we KNOW is him) his approx. birth year is 1839 in Ohio and we know that his mother was born in NY and his father was born in PA.
