The Fitzgeralds I am researching are John and Mary (Kelly) Fitzgerald who lived in Plattsmouth, Greenwood and Lincoln, Nebraska. John was a prominent banker and railroad contractor during the last half of the 1800's. He was born in Limerick County, Ireland; I believe he came from Murroe Parrish. Mary Kelly was born in Elgin, Illinois and was a sister to my great grandfather, Daniel Kelly, Along with their parents, William Kelly and Mary Casey, the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota to Council Bluffs, Iowa to Omaha, Nebraska to Greenwood, Nebraska and Lincoln, Nebraska. Mary Kelly and John Fitzgerald were married in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1871.
John Fitzgerald was born in Limerick in 1829 (although I've recently found other references to 1834). I believe his parents were Edward Fitzgerald and Bridget Brahan (that comes from the research of others; I've yet to find confirmation of that). Research of others also indicates that Bridget may have been a stepmother and that Edward was married previously. Again, no confirmation.
I do know that Edward, John and John's brother, David, immigrated to the U.S. and worked on the Erie Canal before moving westward. Currently, I'm trying to put together their arrival in the U.S. and the route they took that led them to Nebraska. Edward died in New York.
From historical newspapers, I'm beginning to put together quite a collection of articles about various lawsuits in which the Fitzgeralds were engaged, particularly those regarding John's estate after his death. It's a rather fascinating story that involves greed, insanity, suicide, coercion, wills, the exhumation and movement of a dead relative from one cemetery to another. At the moment, I'm quite overwhelmed with the volume of information I'm finding and trying to discover the best way to assimilate the information and file it so I can actually put together the full story at some point.
