Hi Stacy-
Yes, I've noticed if I search for Albert W Fletcher, I get hits for the initial, but not necessarily Fletcher, but it just do Albert Fletcher, I will find my Albert W. Fletcher. I use the Directories the most on Footnote, and can usually find the people in the places where they should be if they live in big cities like Philadelphia or DC

Hi James-

I like Footnote for the Civil War Records and the City Directories. I find the search process frustrating, but I've gotten more used to it. Right now Footnote is definitely slower than usual because of the free 1930 census, but when that is over you may find it useful.

I wish Footnote had a better method to search among the user footnote pages.
Subscribers create the greatest pages there, but others have a hard time finding them. You almost have to know of the creator first and go through all their pages.
Other than that, I love it!

The difference between Footnote and Ancestry is the intent of the website. Ancestry provides a series of databases that are basically indices of books, all the census images (extremely valuable), and the ability to share information through message boards, posting of family trees and photos.
Ancestry is in the process of adding images of books and newspapers to their collections.
Footnote is dedicated to posting the images of documents and some valuable historical collections of books. Their main focus is the posting of images of the documents in the National Archives.
You can add information to Footnote's website in the form of posting stories, photos and documents. You can also improve their indexing system by highlighting and making comments regarding document images that have been posted.

I agree with everyone else. I have both memberships and there is very little duplication (census images, which Footnote has not completed). I am 100 miles from a Family History Center where I could view all the census films. For the price of the gas for three trips, I have an annual subscription to Ancestry where I can view all the census images at my leisure.

I have been able to replace the poor photocopies of Confederate records that I got back in 1987 with enhanced images from Footnote. If you order one set of Civil War records for one ancestor from the National Archives it will cost you $50.00 or more and you will only get 3-5 pages of the record. For around $80 you get an annual membership and get the whole record and access to much more.

I have a subscription to Footnote, but have not spent a great deal of time on it as yet. I'll be interested to read your comments, add mine when pertinent.

Willette, I did look through Ancestry.com's Arkansas Marriage Index, which goes through 1939. There is a G.B. Bryant who married an L.Z. Clark in Monroe County. Or rather, they did get a marriage license, on 6 Apr 1937. There isn't a marriage date listed, so no way of knowing if they actually went through with the marriage or not. The License is in Monroe County, Ark., Vol #1, Pg 098 and is License # 19511.

Thanks Cyndi, how can I find out who he was married to at that time, he had a child with this marriage and I would like to know who the child is and if he is still living.

Thanks again
Willette

Willette, the only thing that shows up for General Bryant is the 1930 Census, and a timeline showing his birth and that he had enlisted in WWII [no records however]. By checking on Ancestry.com I can tell you that he enlisted in the Army on 26 Jun 1943. But again, no records are shown. He was married at that time, and had 2 years of high school education. Ancestry also lists him in the 1920 and 1930 Census and has his SSDI listed.
If I can be of assistance, let me know.
