The following may be of interest to our historians.  If anyone want to translate any of it for our non-French speaking members, feel free to post any!

Also want to point out the Inspector Gamache mystery series by Louise Penny's book BURY YOUR DEAD, deals a lot with F-C history, focusing on Champlain. The series builds on itself, so best to start with the first one, however the above mentioned is very good.

Samuel Champlain son of Samuel Chapleau and Marguerite Le Roy-- this is going to get the historians to start genealogy.

Its no surprise that such a document was found in a protestant archive-- it was the war of religion period- they changed religion to be on the safe side and protect what was left they had. They moved to the" new world" for the promise of Freedom of religion for one!

I have a ancestor that had such a "sour response to other religions' that this revives my thought that I should look in that area to break that wall that I have encountered!

Champlain's Dream by David Hackett Fischer is also excellent. Mentions Abraham Martin as a good friend of Champlain. As none of us can descend from Champlain many of us descend from Abraham Martin so it is especially fun for us and there are many A. Martin descendants.

The french article states that although his grave has not been found they have found Champlain's baptismal cert. It says that he was born in LaRochelle and was born a protestant and that his name was Chapeleau and not Champlain. I will read it further to see if there is anything else to be noted.

I have CHAMPLAIN'S DREAM but have not read it yet. Also I descend from Abraham MARTIN for whom the Plains of Abraham are named.

Another book that you could help some out-- Companions of Champlain - Founding families of Quebec,1608-1635 by Denise R. Larson --Genealogical publishning Co., Baltimore, maryland 2008.

175 pages- Descendants of Champlain's Companion's families'--Births, Marriages and deaths!

Many other names besides MARTIN.

Thank you! I will look that one up right now!!
