Filles à Marier

The Filles à Marier are those women who left France between 1634-1662 to marry men already residing in Nouvelle France. Based on the research of Peter Gagné (book title -Before the King's Daughters: The Filles a Marrier, 1634-1662), 262 women are considered Filles à Marier.

Mr. Gagné definition of a Filles à Marier as a woman who:

• Must have been of marriageable age (ages 12-45).

• Must have immigrated before September 1663 (the Filles du Roi program started at that time).

• Must have either signed an enlistment contract, at least one marriage contract, or got married in the colony.

• Could not be accompanied by both parents.

• Could not be accompanied by or joining a husband.
