I am interested in the La Forte Family that was living in France about 1650. My ancestor is Jan La Forte.
He changed his name to Fort when he came to America. Jan supposedly emigrated to Canada amout 1678. He probably traveled with 2 or 3 brothers from their home in Southern France. When he arrived in Quebec, Canada, he found that you had to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church to own property. Jan thenmoved to Albany, NY soon after his arrival in Canada. He married a Dutch girl named Margriet Rinckhout about 1680. I have more information on my website at www.angelfire.com/ga4/myhayes_family/

Richard,

To find out more about the origins of your ancestor, have you looked at this site:

Those of you with French ancestors who went to Canada first are quite lucky for the genealogists in Quebec have done an enormous amount of wonderful work on the early settlers.

Anna,
There did not seem to be any Forts or La Fortes on the website that you referenced.
Thanks, Richard
So, are you thinking he was Protestant? Are you seeking his place of birth? On the site I showed you, could you not find any list of arrivals?
If you let me know your precise focus, I can try to suggest some other places that might help.
Anne
