I came across a notation in a collection of articles from TN newspapers (Genealogical Abstracts from TN Newspapers, 1791-1808, Vol. 4, No. 23, p. 73): My wife Sarah Gatlin has left my bed and board without just cause. I am not responsible for any debts incurred by her.

QUESTION: Lazarus Gatlin, Sr.'s wife's name was Sarah but the date of the article was April 1804. Lazarus, Sr. married Alice Vendrick in 1793. Lazarus, Jr. didn't marry Eleanor Little until 1816 at age 31. Could this be Jrs. first wife? What say you?

My records don't show anything like that. It shows only Sarah. But who knows. Maybe a little more research.
Larry, which record shows only Sarah? Does your record show only Sarah for Lazarus, Sr? I show 3 wives for him (Elizabeth ???, Sarah Lucas(?), and Alice Vendrick. Only the last is sourced: Groom: Lazarus Gatlin, Bride: Alice Vendrick, Bond Date: 18 Apr 1793, Bond #: 000026414, Level Info: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868, ImageNum: 008187, County: Craven, Record #: 01 128, Bondsman: Samuel Lawson, Witness: S Chapman, Clerk of Court.

Until I read the article from the newspaper above, I had only Eleanor Little for the wife of Lazarus, Jr. Do you have a Sarah listed as Jr.'s wife. If so, do you have any more information about her. Although descended from Jr.'s brother, William, I am trying to collect all the info I can about all descendants of Lazarus Sr.
If you need any more details on anyone in my line, let me know. I only posted my direct line but have information on many descendants' other children and their descendants as well. I am descended from Lazarus Gatlin and Sarah Lucas's son Nathan Marion Gatlin.
There is such a puzzle about our Lazarus and his wife. In his will, he mentions Sarah his wife, and he died about 1808. There is one theory that there are two Lazarus's since one married Alice Vendrick in 1793. Wish we could solve this puzzle.
Since Lazarus and Sarah married in North Carolina in ca1768 and the Lucas's and Gower's did not arrive in Tennessee until 1780, I do not believe Sarah's maiden name was Lucas - most of the Lucas's came from Virginia and Pennslyvania. Do you think someone confused her name with Obediance Lucas? Also, isn't it strange that she left Lazarus in 1804 and then was in his will in 1808? I wonder if our Lazarus had a nephew named Lazarus. Is this confusing enough?
The will, Davidson Co., TN Archives, Will Bk 6 p.05, notation in my database just states that he gives his "wife" a bay horse named Dick, a red cow & calf, beds & furniture & a spinning wheel. Mentions also sons Nathan & Lazarus Jr., son in law Benjamin Castleman, and children Charity, Jesse, Nancy, William and Edmond. I do not have the actual text, do you. Could the "wife" mentioned in the will be Alice whom he (if we have the correct Lazarus) married in Craven Co., NC in 1793 prior to immigrating to TN.

In my database, I have a 3rd Lazarus Gatlin married Rachel Johnson. That is all I know about him. Might have to do more research in that area.
