I recently came across some old documents and was thrilled to find my great-grandmother's Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate. Up until now I had no information about my mothers side of the family because she was left in an orphanage during the Great Depression.
Can anyone help me figure out the location of this village. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Mary Remeika and she married August Krauza in1895.
My document states: Lithuania, government of Russia, State: Suvalki, County: Mariampole, Post Office: Prenai, Village: Ingavangi
Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am just getting started with my search!

Using the search feature at http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/ it was easy to locate the town with the Post Office, Prenai (Prenay, Preny, Prienų, Priyenay), 54°38' N 23°57' E
At http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocRad.asp, I searched for a list of towns near Prenai.
Searching on the latitude and logitude of Prienai gave me Ingavangio/ Ingavangis/ Ingovangi, 7.4 miles west of Prienai at 54°39' N 23°46' E. If you search for "54.6500,23.7667 (Ingavangis)" on Google maps and look at the satelite view, the village is on the road to the right of the Google place marker.
Thank you so much for that information! It is great to finally start putting together some of these clues and actually come up with a village where I know my great-grandparents lived!
Kimberly,
I generally use maps.google.com, though it's not foolproof. Some smaller or defunct villages will not show up there. I think the county line has shifted a bit since your great-grandmother was married (see map). I went to Google maps and just started typing in Ingavan.....and it popped up.
The Lithuanian Vikipedia entry doesn't have much to say, but it's interesting to see that the population in 1923 was 744, compared with 212 people in 2001. I looked at the Lithuanian telephone directory (www.118.lt), but did not find any names close to Remeika or Krauza left in the Prenai area.
Thank you so much for your reply. What a small village! I wonder why the population decreased during those years. Maybe the county line changes and people leaving to find work in the city?!? Thanks for checking the phone directory. I was hoping to find some relatives in the area. My great-grandfather came to America in 1896 and after his wife gave birth to their 3rd child he disappeared. I guess there were rumors that he returned to Lithuania. I'll have to keep searching!
Thanks again.
Hi Kimberly.
I wish I had come across this sooner. My family is from Ingavangis. I have a lot of information about the Remeika and Krause families. My email address is: jjromeiko@yahoo.com
I hope I hear from you soon.
