One of the best sites online to do any type of research work is http://www.rootsweb.com
They have a ton of information and its free too. Even though some of it will send you over to Ancestry.com.
Another good one is Http://www.genforum.com where you can post on family names and other regions.
Even http://www.familysearch.org is a good place to start with your researching. Just remember if possible to check the sources where they got the information sometimes its wrong.
If anybody needs any help with research work online just drop me an email.
I teach classes in online research, and put together toolbar that has the sites I use all the time, and almost all of them are free sites. There is a drop down for pay sites too, to make them convenient, plus tools, access to email, facebook, twitter & now I need to add Genealogy Wise too! You can send me a website you'd like included in the toolbar via the "hi" button, too! Its a totally free download, and you can turn it off or on, or uninstall it easily if you don't like it. http://RelativelyCurious.OurToolbar.com/

Hi all i have hit a dead end with my research and was wondering if soem one could help me please. I am doing research on my husbands family and on my bilogical fathers family but have come up empty. I have found my husband's dad's death certificate online but can't find anything on any of his grandparent's and i can't find any info on any of my bilogical fathers family. So could you please help me Thanks
best place to start in my opinion is the censuses. If you know a bother or a sisters name try searching for a family that included his name and a siblings name. You can use the census info to form a ruff layout of migration and build from there.

Before anyone says it Yes the BEST place to start is with living relatives :) unless you have family like mine who don't talk to each other.
I have a problem with the wife of one of my distant cousins. She was born Margaret Siegler in Altoona PA 13 Apr 1913
She married Frank E. Hartswick (the relative of mine) I don't have a marriage date but he was killed in a traffic accident
on 1 Sep 1936 and the newspaper report says left two "small children" in addition to his wife Margaret and his parents.
Now! when her father died, Oct 1942 , she is shown in the obit as Margaret Mc Graw (of Altoona PA). And then when
Her mother died, Mar 1977, she is shown in the obit as Margaret Wertz (of Downey CA.) I can't find any marriage info.
for any of the three marriages and I do have fairly extensive data on one son, Donald James Hartswick in CA and his
wives and children, but no indication of another child.
I have, in the past found some information in the California Marriage, Divorce, Birth, and Death index's but can't remember
how I got to them. :-) Someone please point me in the right direction. Thanks for any and all help.
