Reference Works

For those of you who are trying to do your amateur genealogy in "up to standard" fashion, there are several resources to help you keep your records according to the rules of "proof" that professional genealogists require. Other books teach one how to write source citations so that others can follow your trail.

A small paperback book called "Genealogical Proof Standard — Building a Solid Case" by Christine Rose (© 2007) costs about $9.

Another small book "Evidence! — Citation and Analysis for the Family Historian" by Elizabeth Shown Mills (©1997) costs about $18.

I think many libraries carry both of them. Elizabeth Shown Mills has a newer, more extensive AND more expensive book about evidence.

I have found both of these small books to be very helpful as I learn my way in recording my family.
