Genealogy Tips and Links

This group was created for anyone who would like to add a link , or a tip for anything to do with genealogy. I really would like to get as many free tips , or sites as we could. However, I know there are some great pay sites out there for research.

For anyone interested in scrapbooking their genealogy and family history data, I would like to invite you to my group Scrap Your Family History. We will discuss both paper and digital scrapping, tips and techniques, and also how to use the ancestry.com page designer app and adding your own designs to it. Thank you Debbie for allowing me to post this here.

Hope to see some of you join us here:

Old German and Czech records show a different last name for women. The father's last name is feminized by adding an "in" to the German surname and an ová at the end to signify daughter of.

If you are researching Czech ancestry, you might want to concentrate your entry research to the Galveston and Baltimore areas before hitting Ellis Island. Especially in the late 1800's up to about 1920 there were large Czech communities in both places, there is still a very large society in the Galveston area. Also, your Czech and Austrian ancestors will most likely have Bohemia listed as their birth place on the census rather than showing Austria, Moravia, Czech Provence or Solvakia.

Czech baptismal certificates at the turn of the century will also list the baby's full names grandfathers, but always the grandmothers. They will also list the child's kmotri or godparent as well as the doctor/midwife that delivered them as well as the father's occupation so they are a real wealth of information.

Just an add-on to Debbie's tip about Ellis Island. Before Ellis Island, there was Castle Gardens, in operation from 1820 to 1892 when Ellis Island opened. The web site has a searchable database but not all passenger lists are digitzed yet.

Debbie that's hilarious, this person should go apply to the government to write their spin :)

I do hope that's tongue in cheek. I personally would tell the horse thief story. But I;d go looking for the reasons he was one. Maybe he was trying to feed a starving family.

When you need small bits of research, like someone to make copies at a courthouse in another state, check our the RAOGK web site.
