George, I agree with you on this. Reunion has not come up to speed with RootsMagic and Legacy on many issues, the source citation templates being one. Perhaps they need a nudge in the right direction.

I don't disagree with this entirely, but over the years I have managed to come up with a number of "custom" sources that I use for things like Vital Records from Scotlands People etc and then just duplicate them as needed.

But I don't think making Reunion comply with Evidence Explained should be the first thing to "rev up".

I'd like to see Places handled much better, with ability to geocode them from inside Reunion with Google maps and a huge database of existing places, store notes and media items about a place - and then have that all go out in a GEDCOM export so it can turn up in my TNG sites.

But I'm a very very very long way from being disenchanted enough to switch from Reunion to running RootsMagic or Legacy in Windows XP under VMWare Fusion as my main genealogy software - I do have all this installed, and use as necessary to "take a look at things" or to handle files that people send me, but I don't really want to be a Windows user. :-)

That's why I use RootsMagic with Vmware on my Mac. Then I port everything to Reunion once a month to get my current tree onto my iPhone. It's tedious at best.

I am an avid Mac user and have Parallels, but don't want to become a Windows user. Have any of you contacted LesiterPro about making some of the changes you think are appropriate?

I'm sure they are aware of it - the sourcing discussion, and the places discussion comes up on their ReunionTalk forum from time to time. As is their policy they don't announce what and when they are doing with regards to development.

I've been feeling the same way about the default source types in Reunion. In fact I've already begun working on a set of source types that get me as near as possible to the standard set by Evidence Explained.

I've got one for census images. I intentionally didn't use it in my screencast, Copying Events in Reunion 9. Many of my audience are careful observers who would have surely noticed and asked about it. I'm not ready to teach this technique yet. :)

After you have set up a source in the format you wish, you can save it as the default for for that event (i.e., "Census"). You must foramt your census citation form as you wish, but after you have done this, saving it as default will save you from redoing this.

See the manual under "Edit Source Window."

I will agree with Roger on the topics of source citations and places. Source citations, AKA-Evidence Explained, would be nice and hopefully will occur but I can work around citations. The places omission by its very nature has no work around.
Leister and company are fully aware of these two areas of concern among users.

I think the biggest need in any Mac based genealogy software is a internet search engine. Family Tree Maker is the granddaddy of finding records online. That said I do not want to be a Fusion appendage. Running PC on a Mac is unnatural. However, it becomes a big mistake to try to keep records up-to-date in Reunion or MacFamilyTree when your most accurate information is being gained via a pc only genealogy software. We need a creative solution within the Mac community.

Since I don't use Family Tree Maker, what is so special on their web search? The fact that it is integrated in the application or that you seem to be able to search many resources from one place (I just looked at a web search screenshot on their website)? Is that web search just like a search in a web browser or can you add people from search results to your database with "one click" or things like that?

Personally I think a web search isn't something a genealogy application needs, the question is also if applications that would get a web search feature could use all the possibilities (of search capabilities) that services like Ancestry and others offer.

Maybe it is possible to integrate genealogy web search as search sets in DEVONagent? Another possibility could be Site Specific Browsers, where you can "run websites as desktop applications". I use the application Fluid to run GenalogyWise.com as it's "own application" on my desktop. So one could make a "desktop application with his favorite search site. As you probably recognized I'm not really good at describing those things in English so for better information please see http://www.fluidapp.com/
