Like most Mac users, I'm STUCK with Reunion, which I really don't like. It's so un-Mac-like in SO many ways (was obviously written by a PC user), but I refuse to run Windows on my Mac unless I absolutely have to. And besides, using Reunion gives me something to complain about. Their customer support is horrendous. After months and months of complaining about a really great feature that was present in Reunion 7 but removed from Reunion 8 (which they blamed on the Mac OS ... an easy cop-out), they very quietly added it back in to Reunion 9. 'Bout time! Oh, if only it were better.

Yes, there are other Mac genealogy programs out there, but in my opinion, they're even worse than Reunion.

... sigh.

Hi Melanie, I use TMG also and have been running it using Parallels on my Mac. I've also been looking at the Mac genealogy programs, but so far, all have been lacking when compared to TMG. Good luck with it.

New to GenealogyWise, new to group. Love my Mac, but have had issues. In fact, I just bought a cheap laptop so i could keep my The Master Genealogist program, Animap, and a few others not available on Mac. I have Reunion 9, enjoy it, and have just downloaded a sample of the new Mac Family Tree, which is interesting.

I use MacFamilyTree. I like it, but I still in the process of weeneing myself off of RootsMagic (Version 2.04).

Yes, RootsMagic is a Windows only program, but I got it to work on my MacBook using CrossOver for Mac. I probably would have kept using it, but CrossOver has a bug that makes RootsMagic crash in certain annoying instances, like after adding a new individual or when generating some reports. That is why I researched several Mac genealogy software options and picked MacFamilyTree.

I would like to take advantage of using the "Open Space" preference by setting one of them up so I can go right to GenealogyWise.

For Francis: There are probably three main contenders for your interest. Reunion, the oldest, and two relative newcomers, iFamily for Leopard (started with Tiger), and MacFamily Tree. Each has different approaches to recommend it. Reunion is very powerful, easy to use and instinctive, with a more "classic view" of a centered couple, both sets of parents above and children below. The power is under the surface but very accessible, with smart fields, navigation aids and so forth. iFamily uses a single-individual focus with very accessible family navigation and views in an instinctive format. MacFamily Tree is very graphics oriented, featuring a family-map graphic for navigation and analysis, and a more customizable set of views for your window. There is another program, Heredis, I believe the name is, that is used extensively in Europe and with which I am much less familiar, and there are undoubtedly others. Search out reviews and feature comparisons of these online. They all also offer free-trial downloads so that you can test-run them for look-and-feel and check for what features, reports, charts, etc. they each offer. Look-and-feel is very different for each, and some features may be disabled from the full versions. I actually have and use all of the first three, but Reunion has been for many years my primary database. My second preference would be the single-person focus of iFamily, but that is just a personal sense of the look-and-feel and difference from the couple-focus of the others. Try them all out, and see what suits your personal instincts and needs. If you are transferring from another program, remember that GEDCOM importing from any other database is never complete, no matter which you choose. That standard is old, and each program uses features not recognized by each other or by GEDCOM. You'll have to do some work to get all your old data set up satisfactorily in your new program as you customize it to your taste.

I am considering purchasing a Mac and just doing homework on the product and possibilities. I can't add to the thread except to ask questions. I'm also new to social networking sites, so I'll appreciate any help anyone wishes to give. I'll read the comments posted to see what other questions I will have.
