This is kind of an awkward message replying to things on the "Comment Wall" - would be much easier were it a discussion....

Anyhow, Reunion will import your dd MMM yyyy/yy dates without complaint - it won't know exactly what to do with them in terms of sorting them into order, but it will import them.

Were you to try and enter such a date into Reunion it will treat it as a Custom Date and ask you what date you want to represent it for sorting purposes, and there you have to choose a "real" date in dd MMM yyyy format to also store - your Custom date will be used in all output, but behind the scenes Reunion will "know" that you mean the dd MMM yyyy date you entered.

I'm using iFamily for Leopard. It a little slow to update, but I really like the html pages it generates, and the application is very easy and "mac-like" to use.

I began my genealogy research over 10 years ago, using The Master Genealogist (TMG) and a subscription to Ancestry.com. I chose TMG based on the reviews I'd read and the features of the software at that time. A few years ago, I bought a copy of Family Tree Maker (FTM) and was able to directly import my TMG files into FTM. I used FTM for a while, taking advantage of its integration with Ancestry.com. Then, I changed jobs, moved, and stopped working on my genealogy. Since then, I've replaced my PC with Macs and an iPhone, and I want to get more active with my genealogy.

I've begun looking at the genealogy software for the Mac. The front-runners seem to be Reunion and Mac Family Tree. I'd like to be abel to more fully compare them before I purchased on or the other, but I'm having trouble doing that. Reunion's demo mode restricts the user to 50 people and does not permit importing. That makes it a little hard to evaluate its ability to import my existing data from either TMG or MFT. I've downloaded the demo copy of MacFamilyTree and have started testing its import function. MFT appears to be limited to reading GEDCOM files, so I have to export the data from either TMG or FTM. I've tried that and have had mixed success. There are date formats in TMG such as "dd MMM yyyy/yy" (to signify that an event could have occurred in either year of two years) that will not import properly. TMG contains explicit instructions on entering date, including changes in calendars and inexact dates. I don't know if either Reunion or MacFamilyTree has that capability. So, I was wondering if anyone has experience with migrating moderate size files from either TMG or FTM, to Reunion or Mac Family Tree.

I have a copy of Parallels and Windows XP, so I could use them to run either TMG or FTM. But I'd rather move this to a native Mac application and get rid of Windows and the headache that comes from maintaining two systems (Mac OS and Windows XP".
I would appreciate any insight you might have.

I have used Reunion since it first came out for Mac. That was when you could purchase a Mac version or PC version. The only problem I have is that they are fairly slow to update and get on board with features that you'll find in PC programs, such as Legacy, RootsMagic, FTM, etc. I would love to see Reunion have the ability to go to Google Maps like those PC versions. I have sent e-mail to LeisterPro and they said I'm not the first to mention some of the things for a major update and they are taking it under consideration. Hmmmm!

If anyone has been using PAF for Macintosh and disappointed that the LDS is no longer supporting PAF, then check out Howard Metcalfe Personal Ancestry Writer II also known as PAWriter II. He has one version for Mac OS 8.6/9.x and one for Mac OS X. It combines most of the features of the LDS Personal Ancestral File program for the Macintosh (for which all development stopped a few years ago after release 2.3.1.) Please visit lanopalera.net and then look on the left hand side and click *PAWriter II (Mac OS).
