Hi Mary,
Internet services such as www.Mozy.com or www.Carbonite.com are very secure. My data are all there. Go ahead, try to access it! LOL.
The added benefit is that it will update the copies that you modify on your own computer -- automatically. If you have a lot of data, $5/month (or even less) is more than worth it.

In your genealogy software there is a place on the "file" menu that says "export". You should be able to clik "export" and it will help you create a GEDCOM file of your research, which you would then save in My Documents or somewhere you can find it.
If you have a CD writer, the GEDCOM file can be sent to be written onto a CD. It's almost the same procedure you use for burning music CDs. You would just be making a data CD instead.
Or, you can plug in a flash drive to the USB port on your computer and send the GEDCOM file to the flash drive.
Or, you can use one of the many on-line backup services. Just Google "on line back up" and you will find them. I don't use them because I want my data to remain with me, not on the internet.
What is your genealogy software? The manual that prob came with it will explain doing back ups in more detail but, the above is basically what you do.
We really need to have a chat for this, I think. Lots of people need help with understanding the why and the how of doing it. And, it's an important part of genealogy research if you use a computer for your research.
Did this help answer the question you asked? You can back up any files on your computer this way but, you don't have to create the GEDCOM first. The GEDCOM is a way for different genealogy programs to read what another genealogy program has created.

Unfortunately, there is no archive feature for the chat. The chat through the Ning platform we are using is very very basic.
Also-Sherry there is no way to tell who is in the Chat Room. The numner you see for how many people online is actually how many are online using GW, not how many are in the chat room.
You can either click on the GenealogyWise Chat bar at the bottom of the page to access the chat or you can click on the Chat link at the top of the page in the navigation bar.

I can find the tab BUT no content except what they advertise is about to happen or has happened.
I wonder where the archives are .
Maybe when the owner of the site sees the query she will help

Christine: I was wondering abt this also. I checked in the chat room and they say there is no archives. Go to Main page and clik on "chat" tab at top of page. That takes you to chat room.
I think there is a list of scheduled chats listed there in case you need that.

How do I access the chat or the archives of the chat I wonder

You prob won't lose anything. I won't either unless something catastrophic happens and it might since I live on the Texas Gulf Coast. But, I have a plan for that, too.
That's one reason I have the data in genealogy software and on CDs, flash drives, etc. I also keep separate files of documents, photos,etc. But, I have the originals in the hard copy files.
Actually, I don't very often have major breakthroughs that would necessitate backing up so often. But, when I do, everything stops until I have it taken care of.
But, nothing gives me more pleasure than choosing a family in my files and going thru it viewing all the photos, documents,etc in real time. And, sometimes just touching those things gives me an idea or a clue to follow.
Back to the discussion: it's a matter of choice. Of course, if you do not keep hard copy files of all your research then is prob a good idea to have those files backing up as soon as you enter something.
That's just not my system. It's yours and others my find this is what they would do.
But, a chat would certainly give those who are new to it many ideas and options for saving their research thru back ups.
