I have several German families I am researching.
My greatgreatgrandfather was Johann Martin Weber from Buggingen, Baden, Germany. He married Maria Theresa Geismeier from Friedericksburg (sp?). I cannot find a marriage for them in the LDS records for Germany, or Switzerland. I have some reference that their oldest 3 children may have been born in Switzerland.
I am also researching Gohringer. My greatgrandfather was Johann Gohringer who reportedly came to the US as a child. He was a butcher in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, till his wife died leaving him with 3 children to raise. He moved then to Chicago, IL, and remarried. I don't know anything about his parents, though I keep trying to find them. I am assumming he came to the US with them, but I really don't know. He was born in Wuertemberg (sp?), Germany, somewhere.
The Thalhofers are a bit of a mystery to me. My dad said they came from Alsace-Lorraine. That Andrew Thalhofer Sr. was the son of a German father and a French mother.
Most all of these people emigrated to the US in the 1860s, but Johann Gohringer arrived a bit later.
The Webers settled in Chicago, as did the Thalhofers, though both families spent time in Indiana. The Thalhofers first stop was in Cinncinati, Ohio.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Another thing I found that has me totally confused is that Maria Theresa Geismeier and Johann Martin Weber in a 1910 or 1920 census show a Ferdinand Kodweis living with them who says he is the uncle of the head of the household. I am assuming he is an uncle of Maria Theresa's because I know most of the Weber genealogy back in Germany to about 1600.
Any help would be appreciated. Is there a good way to find marriages in Germany other than the LDS records?
