I have several German families I am researching.

My greatgreatgrandfather was Johann Martin Weber from Buggingen, Baden, Germany.  He married Maria Theresa Geismeier from Friedericksburg (sp?).  I cannot find a marriage for them in the LDS records for Germany, or Switzerland.  I have some reference that their oldest 3 children may have been born in Switzerland.

I am also researching Gohringer.  My greatgrandfather was Johann Gohringer who reportedly came to the US as a child.  He was a butcher in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, till his wife died leaving him with 3 children to raise.  He moved then to Chicago, IL, and remarried.  I don't know anything about his parents, though I keep trying to find them.  I am assumming he came to the US with them, but I really don't know.  He was born in Wuertemberg (sp?), Germany, somewhere.

The Thalhofers are a bit of a mystery to me.  My dad said they came from Alsace-Lorraine.  That Andrew Thalhofer Sr. was the son of a German father and a French mother.

Most all of these people emigrated to the US in the 1860s, but Johann Gohringer arrived a bit later.

The Webers settled in Chicago, as did the Thalhofers, though both families spent time in Indiana.  The Thalhofers first stop was in Cinncinati, Ohio.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Another thing I found that has me totally confused is that Maria Theresa Geismeier and Johann Martin Weber in a 1910 or 1920 census show a Ferdinand Kodweis living with them who says he is the uncle of the head of the household.  I am assuming he is an uncle of Maria Theresa's because I know most of the Weber genealogy back in Germany to about 1600.

Any help would be appreciated.  Is there a good way to find marriages in Germany other than the LDS records?

Thank you! This is terrific! I am not the only one in my family trying to find out more about her.
Hi Gloria,

I've just been into the new.familysearch site and noticed your name as a contributor against Maximillian's name. I don't know if you can get on the site, but obviously you have the Weber info.; do you have the Geismeier line, too. That's keeps going back. It's midnight here, so I had to stop, but it looks as though the whole family continues for some time. I noticed too, that the spelling of the place is Fredrichschafen, and that comes up quite a bit (as Maximillian's birth place, too). I also found reference to two film #s: 1553346 and 1287810. Haven't had time to go in and check out what they are for, but they are quoted as references for some of the info. listed. You can check them out at familysearch.org > Library > Library Catalogue > Film/Fiche search. Also found that Carol Hill has submitted some of the info.: carol_h77@yahoo.com. Don't know how old that email address is, but it is worth a try.

If you can't get into the site (not open to non-members of the LDS Church yet), find an LDS Family History Centre and ask if someone is willing to go in for you and do a search. I put in Johann Martin Weber, Male, Birth, Baden, Germany and spouses name. It came up immediately.

Hope this helps. Good luck
Me again. I couldn't sleep, so thought I would get up and have a look at the other names you mentioned. Do you have any more info. on Johann Gohringrt? Approx. date of birth, or death date, death place, wife's name? When I entered his name and place of birth I got over 7000 hits with 511 of those being very close matches! Looks like three generations there. You didn't say where they fit in, but I notice that you have submitted it. When I typed in Alsace-Lorraine, it was completed with France, NOT Germany, so you may need to consider that when searching. There is also Patrick D.Callen (ps.call@att.net) also researching this.

Just noticed that some of the information has been disputed by you, so that means you can get into the site. Good luck with it all. It is a hard slog, but so well worth it. Everytime I come up with a 'hit' anywhere on any of my German names, my little heart starts to beat faster, and then I discover it is only the information I have submitted myself! I have yet to find anyone working on any of my names. Oh well.......
