Hi Dianne,

To find his place of origin, you need to find a "good" record at the last place her was known to have lived that lists his village or town. Also, include other that he was associated with including spouse, children, bother, sister, etc. They may lead you to his home town in germany.

When he died, did his wife apply for a penson? What side was he on in the civil war? What did do to earn a living? Did he attend the catholic church in WV? Also, WV was not formed until 1863. So, you'll have to look at VA records before that date.

Sorry I can be of much help, and you need to dig deeper to find him more details of his life Germany did not become a country until 1871, and before that most of the records we kept by the churches. If you come to a "brick-wall" you will need to widen your search by look at his relatives and associates? So, once you find where he was in Germany, you'll have to use church records.
Also, have you found anyone who is researching him? I'd check on that first. Maybe someone else has the answer?

Hi Carol, Peter Saurborn was born in Montabaur, Koblentz, Prussia in 1819 before it was part of Germany and still Prussia. His father was Martin SAUERBORN. I don't know if that town even exits now. Peter was either a Catholic priest or in study for it. His wife attended A Southern Babtist church I know. Saw her name as a member, but not his. I do know they were both religious. He is not listed as a veteran of the Civil War per Boyd Stutler the author of a civil war book. I can't recall the name. Written in I believe the 20tys. Peter was a Post Master in WV.Had been a Sheriff. Along with Hays a former Sheriff formed the 186th Regiment to counter the Yankees. He was killed before it was mustered in to the Confederate Army so he was not listed as being killed by union troops. As far as Prussia his birth do you have any suggestions. Dianne

Hi Dianne!

I just heard that's Peter's stone is in the back of Bethleham Baptist Church Cemetery in Calhoun Co.,WV. Do you know where that is? I hope you can find it! Do you have the information on his parents & grandparents? If you don't I have it.

I know the cemetery. It's right out of town. We were lucky that a caretaker was there and walked around with us. He showed us where the graves were for that time period. We looked everywhere. We looked at every flat stone laying on the ground. There must have been around 20. We found only one with writing on it. We hit every cemetery south to north on RT.16. We need ro go back and hit the road east to west on Rt.5. I did find that Mary Saurborn was a member of that church, but is not buried there. Dianne

Thank you very much they may have something on him. He was studing for the priesthood when he came to America in 1840. Not sure if he had taken his vows or not. I have heard different versions of that. As you can see by me being his GGG grand daughter he did marry here in West Virginia. He fought in the Civil War in 1860 and was killed early on, and was on the Confederate side. He was a Sheriff and a Post Master. Dianne gooden tag
