Vogel/Vogle family

I am searching out any information on Gabriel Vogel came to Canada in 1833 from Rust,Baden with his father George Vogel and his siblings. His father George Vogel (b.Feb 22,1786) in Rust,Baden was married at the time to Franciska Driesner (second wife) .
Gabriel's mother is Theresia Spoth, daughter of Martin Spoth and Anna Rinkenauer, she was born Sept 21, 1784, in Rust, Baden.She died Oct 17, 1829 in Rust, Baden.
George and Theresia were married on Feb 19,1810 in Rust, Baden.
George Vogel's father was Johann George and his father was also Johann George.
Children of George Vogel and Theresia Spoth are Clemence Nov 19,1819, Agnes Jan 13,1813 and Gabriel abt. 1821. all in Rust, Baden, Germany

Hi Lynn-

Looking at Ancestry, I find a Gabriel Vogel, born abt 1815/1816 in Baden on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records in Waterloo, Ontario. There is also a death record for a Gabriel Vogel, age 70, who died Septemeber 15, 1885, in Waterloo, born in Baden. Unfortunately, there is no record of his parents on the death record.

Thank you Kate, I do have all of this. And that is my guy. However,I have nothing from the time he arrived abt 1833 until that first census. I also have nothing prior in Germany. This is where I would really like to focus my efforts. Any suggestions.

Lynn, You said you have nothing prior to 1833 from Germany, but you have good info on Gabriel's parents and siblings, and the names of grandparents. Do you mean that you have no documentation for these dates? If so, the LDS Family History Library (FHL) has filmed the Catholic parish registers of Rust from 1652 to 1900, on five reels. You can any or all of these delivered to your local Family History Center (FHC). There is a shipping charge. Regards, John in Stuttgart, Germany

Oh, and there is a family book also. This is essentially a book of family group sheets. The parish priest creates a new sheet for each marriage, and then fills in the kids, their marriages, deaths, emigration, etc., as they occur. Great source!

Thank you. You are correct. We have names and some dates but no documentation. I will then be making my way to my LDS centre and order these. My research has been mostly confined to online and I realize I now need to venture pass the computer. Thanks for the directions. Are these records difficult to read. Will I need someone with a knowledge of German or will I be able to make them out myself.

Lynn, You are in for an adventure! The records are in German, and the old "running hand" or Suetterlin script that was used before 1941 must be learned separately, even by younger Germans. It looks like a jagged sawtooth running across the page with a few whirls and loops here and there. But it can be done! There may be someone at your local FHC who can help you get started. I suggest you go to http://www.cyndislist.com/germany.htm#Language and click on two links: (1) German Genealogical Word List, and (2) Handwriting Guide: German Gothic. The Hadnwriting Guide can be downloaded as a PDF. With a little vocabulary under your belt and some idea of what the writing looks like, you'll be able to get a start.

The family book (Familienbuch) is one of the five films the FHL has.

Sorry, I just go by pattern recognition to find names rather then reading the Suetterlin script. As far as I can tell, the record contains mostly what you already know. In the right column, the top name is Vogel and the lower one is Spoth. Georg and Theresia's names are directly to the left of each. The part under "Georg" is the date written out and Georg's parents; the part under "Therese" contains her parents names. The only other info might be occupations for each and probably the witnesses, but I don't have the skill to make them out.
