It is certainly worth checking it out. My Thomas Gilbert had a daughter Anne, WHo married Richard Simpson. Their grandson, William Simpson II, was born 1721 in old Baltimore Co MD. He and dozens of his relatives moved to Augusta Co VA in the 1740s. Some may have been there earlier. I have not noticed any Gilberts with my folks in VA, but do pick up on them in the 1750s in Rowan Co NC.

I am not terribly familiar with just how big Augusta Co VA was at that time, but it did cover far more territory than now. I do know that my Ancestor, James Robinson, died 1751 at Linville Creek.

My Gilberts were of English origin, proven by DNA. But alot of the people they lived around were Scots-Irish. It should be worth your effort to check for a Gilbert girl among the Unknowns in your tree.

My ancestor was 1815 Mobile, Alabama, 3rd U.S. Infantry, Col. Gilbert Christian Russell, Sr., born Abingdon, Va. His great grandfather was Gilbert Christian who settled Beverly Manor, Christian's Creek, Augusta County, Virginia, in the 1730's; allegedly of Scot-Irish descent.  I do not know if one of his forebears had a family name of "Gilbert"?
