I am sure that there are minimum requirements somewhere on NING for users. It would be great if the admin of this group would point those minimums out for users!

Browser issues:

Firefox 2 will not load chat.
Opera 9.64 seems to work.

I've noticed we don't have a Civil War group (though we do have Confederate Ancestors). I'd start one but my interest is just in passing. Something as important as the Civil War should rightly have an admin more devoted to the subject than me.

Of course the best thing to do is create a Ning site that you can experiment with, that way any code that you input to change the way your page looks can be tested, and changed or discarded as you feel fit, without to many problems on the master site.

The trouble with Genealogywise and the way the site works, is that they have only created the site from Ning itself, in other words i should think only Ning can make a lot of those changes that people ask for!!.

Hi Jill,
In answer to your question about changing the header image, it looks like you could change the background color and the background image. However you cannot eliminate the masthead and sitename information. What I have been able to do (see my home page) is to tighten it up and show more of the background image of the theme I chose by making the following changes to the CSS:
1. Replaced this line: #xg_masthead p#xg_sitename, #xg_masthead p#xg_sitedesc, #xg_body, #xg_navigation ul {
With this line: #xg_body, #xg_navigation ul {
2. Deleted the following two sections:
#xg_masthead p#xg_sitename {
font-size:4.5em;
line-height:1em;
padding-top:1em;
padding-left:0;
}

#xg_masthead p#xg_sitedesc {
font-size:2.5em;
color:#000;
padding-bottom:0;
padding-left:0;
*padding-bottom:1.5em;
}

The color change is easy . . . (forgive me if I'm explaining what you already know) in the grouping:
#xg_head ( background: #fff url
the #fff is the color specification (in what is known as hex a.k.a. base 16).
The three "f"s are in fact one setting for each of the primary colors, so the possible values of each position are 0-9 (10 numbers) and "a", "b", "c", "d", "e", and "f" (the other 6 numbers). So, setting these three (yellow, red and blue) to "fff" makes the white background. On the opposite side of the spectrum, setting this to "000" will create a black background.

Before you make any changes, I recommend copying the original code into Notepad (or another text editor) on your desktop. Then make your changes, click on Save, and you will see if you like the results. If you don't like them, you can always copy the original CSS back from your text editor and Save again.

Suggestion...

The GenealogyWise badge is the ugliest looking badge I've seen. Might I suggest, ahem, encourage GenealogyWise's team to let a design person create a better looking one... and this time, put the focus on the user, not advertising yourself. Once it's cleaned up, the very fact we use it on our sites and blogs will be much more impressive to the visitor then the short message you can put in it.
