What I understand about German first names is that the first name Johann is the patron saints name and Andoni is the business or commonly used name for  identification. So Andoni and Georg are different people.  In the last name Hel is a modifier meaning BRIGHT or LITE. The root is MANTEL meaning coat or jacket. ER is one from that area.  The T and D are interchangeable as are the C and K.

For several decades I have looked for any phonetic similar surnames in Germany, US and Switzerland.  Our oral tradition was that the Helmanthalers we "men of the Rhineland".  Scholars said the name meant " the valley of the plumed helment" or "dollar hat".  Another scholar which I plan to take a college course from this summer is  Dr. Roger Minert who believes that Helmantoler means people from an area called Helman which would be on the side of a hill in Southern Germany.  I have searched  all the gazetteers with the only close reference being the Hellenthal in the Eifel near Aachen Germany.
