My name is Henry John Vincent Horlick, I am from South Africa, My great grand father, Henry Horlick came to South Africa from Bristol, England to Kimberley,in South Africa abt 1875, His parentsa are William Horlick and Louisa Matthews. He married Caroline Elizabeth Bishop who was the widow of a doctor with the surname of Wills, they lived in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, but for some reason she was in Kimberley and she had a claim in the diamond mine that became the "Big hole", it had to be closed down because water filled all the claims and became to dangerous to mine.  Henry had a canteen there, and Caroline the claim.  When the Chief Surveyor closed down many of the claims, the people left the area and they both filed for bankruptcy.

Henry and Caroline had 3 children, 1 son, Henry John Vincent Horlick, (my grand father) and two girl). The two girls were both born in Kimberley, but we cannot find any proof of Henry being born in SA. He might have been born in Bristol, but we need to do further research to be sure of that.

They moved to the Johannesburg area and he worked for the Water Works as an engineer for a while, he later opened a confectionery shop in Nigel, he died in 1924 in the Rietfontein, Hospital in what is now the Edenvale area.  His wife died in 1928 in Pretoria, leaving 4 farms in the Waterberg area.

His line also goes back to the same year of 1189, though Alexander Horlick and Martha Barnfield.

Me and my 4 sons, my 2 two brothers and their 1 son each. one of them has a boy, 11 males, are the only males who carry the Horlick name forward in South Africa.

You can contact my any time, I have found another family member called Roy Horlick from Bristol, England or at least he found me, and we are now corresponding.

Hi my name is Emma Brinsdon and I have been looking into my family history. I am also related to Alexander Horlick and Martha Barnfield through their daughter Sarah Horlick and her marriage to Richard Wiggall in Cranham, Gloucestershire. I saw your post about information on the family tree further back and although I gather they're from Dorset I would love any further information if possible? Thanks.
