Comment by Rebecca Kenton Pyle on July 22, 2009 at 8:31am: Gail, I have a couple of clues obtained from a history of Clark Co., OH. Here's an excerpt from a biographical sketch of George's son William: "George Houck, his father, is supposed to have been born in the same place, while his father, John Houck, it is thought, was a native of Pennsylvania. He was a brick-maker by trade and carried on the business in Emmitsburg, though he spent his last years at Mercersburg, Pa. The father of our subject learned his father's trade at Emmitsburg and made the brick there for the large nunnery in that town." When George got to Springfield he opened a brick yard there.

Comment by Gail Winstanley on July 21, 2009 at 5:37pm: Hi Rebecca. I wonder if your George and my Jacob are brothers. My family comes down through his line, he was born in January of 1782 in the Frederick area and died here in 1862. I've kind of hit a bit of a brick wall on him as well, but I will keep you posted as to what I find, it might help you as well.

Comment by Rebecca Kenton Pyle on July 21, 2009 at 9:59am: I'm a descendant of George Houck who married Mary (Polly) Snyder in Frederick Co., MD. He was born 1782 either in Emmitsburg, MD, or in PA. They moved to Springfield, OH, about 1836. George died there in 1862. Polly died in Springfield in 1866. I descend from their daughter Keziah who married Isaac Spencer. They ended up in Ottumwa, IA. I've never been able to find (for sure) George's parents

Comment by Connie VanValkenburg on July 15, 2009 at 9:23pm: Hi, My maternal great grandmother was Clara Jane Houck, daughter of Jacob Houck and Ruth Anna Kephart, of North Coventry,Chester County, Pennsylvania. She is believe to be descended from Johann Georg Haugen who died in Germany in 1732. Clara was married to Irwin Harner and died in 1933.

Comment by Gail Winstanley on July 15, 2009 at 8:03pm: Hi Patrice and welcome to the Houck Family Group. I've only gone back as far as Jacob Houck, 1785-1892 in Frederick Maryland. I'm still checking on where in Germany they came from. My Houcks started out in Frederick County Maryland and then ended up in Carroll County

Comment by Patrice Houck Schadt on July 15, 2009 at 7:16pm: Where is your Houck Family from? I have traced mine from Rohrbach-Steinweiler Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1700's. They lived in Northampton and Monroe Counties, Pennsylvania.
