My gggrandfather came to South Australia in 1850 his name at the time was John James Devanny and upon his marriage here in South Australia in 1852 to a Mary Fitzgerald he changed his name to McAvaney. I would like to know if anyone could help me out in finding more on the surname Devanny as being a pensioner I cannot afford to pay for a lot of sites any help would be gratefully received have attached some notes on my family which may help people to help me

Christine, there is a historian named Jim Devanie/Devenney (he spells it both ways on his business card), Deputy Chairman of the Board, Ulster-Scots Agency, Franklin House, 10-12 Brunswick Street, Belfast Northern Ireland BT2 7GE. He lives in Co. Donegal. Northern Ireland is very small - you can make a complete circle of Ulster in a day, stopping along the way to sight see & have breakfast, lunch & dinner! :-) And Scotland is so close that at a point north of Belfast you can see SW Scotland 18 miles away. Jim's a very helpful & knowledgable fellow and sure to know the history of the name. Write to him or email: www.ulsterscotsagency.com. Martha Davis

Christine: By chance I just stumbled upon your two messages to me - I hadn't received them from GenWise. I went on two Ulster-Scots tours to Ireland in '05 and '06 which Glen Pratt from Texas organized, and Jim Devanie/Devenney was one of the historians who toured with us out of Belfast into Co. Donegal. I later wrote to him for the name of a Co. Donegal "Stewart" researcher's name which he provided, but it wasn't quick. I would suggest that you write to him again saying Martha (one of the Southern gals) with Glen Pratt's group (he should remember) referred you to him & your 1st message might've fallen thru the cracks of his busy life, you're writing again to refresh his memory & request his help with your search. I would also write to the Ulster Scots Agency, attention Maynard Hanna, (he knows me, too) asking for his help. You might do that by postal service to Ulster-Scots Agency 68/72 Great Victoria Street, Belfast BT2 7BB, Northern Ireland or email to hannam@ulsterscotsagency.org.uk. Happy hunting, Martha

Christine, I 'again' stumbled upon your message! Here's a site for you for free Irish research - www.ancestryireland.com/scotsinulster. Shown in the First Scottish Migrations to Ulster, 1606-1641 is the Surname "McIlveyne" which I'd search on that site. Let me hear directly if you have any luck, k? Martha marthadavis1@mindspring.com
