St Joseph's Cemetery on Pond St.was a final resting place for many Irish and German Catholics in Syracuse NY. It was run by the Franciscans and was in use up until the 1950's.  It fell into disuse and was vandalized. In the mid 60's a developer acquired the land and some 6500 bodies were exhumed and moved to Assumption Cemetery also in Syracuse where they were placed in a mass grave. Of these only 450 or so bodies were identified. The Wegman's grocery store and parking lot now occupies the site of St Joseph's cemetery. There is no monument there to mark the spot.

When I started researching my Byrne family from Syracuse a cousin told me my great grandparents were buried at Assumption.  When I went there not knowing anything about St Joseph's, Assumption had no record of them being buried there. Nor do they have any record of the people moved there from St Joseph's  Later after learning of the mass grave, they seemed embarrassed about the existance of a mass grave.

Anyway here is the link to the St Joseph Records. http://nortonresearch.com/gen/OCPL.php?name=StJoes
