Hi John

I was curious about your post when you mentioned Cunningham. Our Cunninghams that settled in Ontario were from County Down, but with connections to Ayrshire in Scotland. I have subscription to Find My Past.ie and I took a quick look to see where Egans show up. It appears that the surname Egan comes up almost exclusively in the Dublin city 1901 census, so Dublin would be a good place to start a search. The BMD's show records by the Tipperary Clans Archive in Dublin and area and the Wills show up in the Diocese of Dublin. I also checked the Book of Ulster Surnames and Egan is not in the book but Aiken Eiken is, which likely means your people are less apt to have been from the northern part.

Can you find a death or marriage certificate in Scotland that may indicate a place of birth? I have a number of 1851 census fragments for family in County Antrim. I was surprised by how many of the young adult family members were absent and "working" in Scotland. Hard times forced a lot of people across the channel to work. My people were working in the mines and in the textile industry as sewers and weavers.

Also, if you can find them on a Scottish census, you will find out what their religion is. That is extremely important when searching Irish records.
