Hi, Group!

I'm very inexperienced with the Irish side of genealogy, even though several branches seem to originate there. One of these was Margaret who was apparently born somewhere in Ireland between 1816 and 1818.

After an unknown period in England she sailed on HMS Buffalo to South Australia on 11 June 1836, describing herself as a House Servant, 17, from Portsmouth. Soon after, she married a Royal Marine ancestor of mine, Richard Mew.

My questions are whether "Shine" or "Shines" is a very common Irish surname, whether any other researchers have found possibly related family in England (Margaret is perhaps unlikely to have arrived unaccompanied?), whether the Shines origins in Ireland might be guessed at.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Charles, very helpful, thanks. Haven't spotted the real deal yet, but it's a great place to make enquiries. Paul.

Paul, I found a Carson Johnson (The Killen Family) who married Margaret Ann Shine 23 Jul 1835.  She was his 3rd wife.  Margaret Ann Shine b 17 March 1809 and d 28 Apr 1888.  http://www.carsonjohnson.com/chapter14-killen.htm

I know you said she was born ca 1816-1818, but thought this link might be worth looking into, if for no other reason than to broaden your Shine Family knowledge.

Also... I found the Shine and Sheehy family in County Limerick, Ireland.  Listed are the children of Jacqueline Margaret Shine and Gregory Lee.  http://home.alphalink.com.au/~datatree/Burke/Burke-p/p12.htm

Let me know if I'm overdoing it.  Don't want to make you crazy.

I know there are still families called Shine in County Clare, if this helps.many years ago as you know many families emigrated, Good Luck in your search.
