I am researching my ggggrandparents, Terence Quinn and Mary Byrne from Borris Townland, RC parish of Borris, civil parish of Clonygoose (or Clonagoose). I believe he was a farmer. Mary died before 1846, and I believe that Terence died before 1855.

Terence and Mary had sons baptized in Borris Church in 1810 (Peter) and 1813 (Michael), and there were at least three other children. Five of the sons emigrated to Canada beginning c1825 and settled in St. Anicet Parish, Quebec. It is probable that all five of the emigree sons married in Canada, but two of them married girls (sisters?) by the name of Kavanagh which is also a common name in the Borris, Carlow area.

Any information would be appreciate, and I would love to hear from anyone also researching these families or in this area.

Byrne (var. Byron) I'm looking for the Irish origins of my paternal grandparents: Henry Murphy and Sarah Byrne Murphy. My father used to say they were from County Cork, but I have yet to find any facts. Sarah Byrne Murphy (b.1866 - d.1929) was born to Thomas and Mary Byrne; they also had a son James Byrne (b.1876) also born in Ireland. I'm assuming there were more children. Doing the math standby of 20-yr. generations, I'm thinking Thomas and Mary were born around 1846. There's a family story that at the time Henry and Sarah were emigrating (1881-1882?), there was a rule (law?) that you had to be married, and so they were and in their early teens!

I don't have extensive detail on this family other than the various Canadian
census records. If you want these let me know?
Hello Annie,
I was so surprised and happy to hear from you about our common ancestors. Terence Quinn and Mary Byrne were also my ggg grandparents. I am currently on holiday in New Zealand (hence the delayed reply to your posting…) and do not have access to all of my information, but wanted to respond with what I know at this time. I am not a trained researcher, so please excuse any silly questions or comments here…
1. I know that Peter Quinn was born to Terence and Mary 1810 in Borris, County Carlow and his brother Michael was born 1813. They were both baptized there in the Catholic Church. I don’t believe that there are any other church records for the family. I have researched the records both on line and in Borris and could find nothing else—no other children and no records of either the marriage or deaths of Terence and Mary.

Do you have any documentation on the births of either John or Thomas (b 1808)? Is it possible that one or both of them were the sons of another (possibly Paul) Quinn. I believe several of us assumed that all the Quinns that emigrated to St. Anicet were brothers, but I now think it is more likely that some were cousins.

2. Do you have any information on when Thomas emigrated to Canada? I believe it is very probable that Peter emigrated in 1825 (not quite 15 years old..), but assisted by his god-father who is also buried in St. Anicet. It would appear that the two families were close and that emigration from both families occurred together over some time.

3. I am confused about your Sr. Daniel Quinn. It seems as though he was born 1840 and died 1955. That would have made him 115 years old at the time of his death??? Am I correct in assuming that it was his son who died 19-Nov-1959??

4. When you have numbers inserted into names (e.g. MARIE ELIZABETH3 ROGERS) does that mean that Marie was the third daughter or the third child or ???

5. I live in Ireland some of the time and have been fortunate to find the family farm records and actually to visit the land. If you want any information on that, let me know. I can send you a write up and also some photos.

6. Thanks for your update on the cemetery records for St. Anicet—I had not seen that new site and will add information on some of the entries.

7. I am not sure how you made the John Higgins/Margaret Crean connection, but they were the parents of Bridget Higgins, who married Terence Peter Quinn. Their daughter Mae (Mary) was my maternal grandmother. I suspect that John Higgins emigrated from Youghal, County Cork.

Enough for now. If you want to contact me off-list, feel free to do so at dianagoulet@sbcglobal.net
