Hi Diane,

My G-G-grandfather was Timothy Lynch, born in the Glengarriff area of western Cork. Lynch and Sullivan are very prevelant in the Glengarriff area of Cork and also of County Kerry. I don't know if we are looking for the same families, but my Timothy and 2 of his brothers came to NYC around 1849 and died there too. All of my Catherine's (so far) were born in NYC or if they stayed in Ireland, they were of a different age than yours.

Did John and Catherine have any children? Do you have their information for 1900, 1910, and 1920 only? If they did have children, do you have the birth or baptism certificates? Do you have their immigration records? Naturalization records? WWI record for John? Do you belong to Ancestry.com?

Here are a couple of things for you to take a look at and see what you can find (if you haven't already). Most people came to the US with relatives already here, so it's always good for you to have these url's to check as they hold LOTS of information. On the Emigrants Savings bank site, I found out where my Timothy was from. Even though your family settled in Westchester, there's a good chance they were in the city first. Sorry if I'm giving you info that you already know!

Rootsweb.com - join the Westchester, NY mailing list and when you might want to join the mailing lists for County Kerry and Beara (where most Lynch and Sullivan families are from) - BEARA@rootsweb.com and IRL-KERRY@rootsweb.com .

There is a man on both Beara and Kerry that is the historian of the area and has written the Annals of Beara that is loaded with information on families. If you join those 2 lists and email all of the information that you have, you probably will hear from him, either personally or on the list. I bought Volume III and found a wealth of information on my Lynch/Shea families and found Sullivans and Harringtons that married into my family. Good luck and I hope you will find them!

Hi Kathleen,
Thank you for your reply and the sites as I did not have them!! I am on ancestry and have looked up records from 1900 on. I will give you that info in a moment. I have a couple of death certificates from the children of Catherine and John. The ones I have had moved to CT. and I was able to get the certificates there after looking online through the social security index.

There children were: Margaret(Maggie), Ellen(Nellie or Ellie), Therresa, Mary, John, Kate, Anna(my Grandmother), William, Alfred and Harry.

Catherine(Kate), Ellen and my Grandmother all moved to Ct. and all died there. I have all three death certificates and my Grandmothers birth certificate. I thought Maggie, Ellen, Therresa, Mary and John were born in Ireland, but when I got Ellen's death certificate it stated she was born in White Plains NY 7 years later than the 1900 census stated. I am sending for her birth certificate first to see if they find one or not and to see what it states.

On the 1900 census it states that all the children were born in NY and that Catherine was also born there. But in the 1910, 1920 census' it is listed that she was born in Ireland. Also on my Grandmother's birth certificate and all the death certificates it states both parents born in Ireland. I did research Lynch's in NY that had a Catherine born in 1856 and there was only one and she did not marry a Sullivan. It could be that she remarried due to a divorce or death of spouse but I had no info to confirm or deny that.

I did find the names of Alfred and Harry's wives and some of the children but could not get the birth certificates in Mamaroneck because they do not keep those files from back then, they were sent to Albany and I plan to request those too.

I have never found any info on Therresa, but she may have married and I have no idea whom. When my Grandmother died in 1951 her obit stated her living siblings. I do know Maggie married a man with the last name of Merritt, and one of the other sisters married a Coleman and in 1951 lived in Port Chester. John and William lived in Buffalo NY at the time. Catherine and Ellen of course were in CT, one in Milford and the other Stratford. I mention the towns because I noticed you were from CT also. I was born and raised in Milford and moved to Guilford after I married. We moved to SC three years ago.

I have never been able to find anything much on William or John. I did find a marriage certificate on I believe John who married a women in Canada. It was his correct birth year and did state he was born in Mamaroneck, had a father John Sullivan and a mother Catherine but Catherines maiden name was not Lynch so I could not prove that he was my John! It does get frustrating at times.

I have looked into Emmigrant Savings but never found a Catherine Lynch that fit mine, nor a John Sullivan. As for naturalization and immigration I again have many to choose from but not sure which was mine. There were so many John and Catherine Sullivans at that time so when I found what could match I did save it to my tree. I have since had to delete many of them. I also filled in Catherines parents but now know I have the wrong ones and will have to delete them as well. I paid to go onto the brs genealogy site and get birth certificates for Catherine in Limerick. I really thought I had the correct ones but alas I was wrong.

It is funny that you mention Glengarriff because I have met a women here in SC that was from Mamaroneck and knew many Sullivans. As she was born in Ireland she also told me to look in Glengarriff because Sullivans were prevelant there. She was also born there but her maiden name was not Sullivan. I will join the 2 lists you gave me and hopefully someone will have some info. Thanks again for all your help and I will let you know if I find any additional info on them. Who knows there may be a connection between our Lynch's yet!!!!\

Well, I got home 2 weeks ago and forgot to get back on here to see how you are doing with the Lynch and Sullivan families. Have you found anything yet? I am hoping that someone on the Kerry or the Beara Rootsweb lists would have helped you by now.

Hi Kathleen,
Thanks for writing back and yes I did find one document thanks to my Mom. She remembered that John was married to a Rose and lived in Buffalo NY. I was able to find the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census for them. They had no children but did live in CT (Milford) when I lived there as a child!!! I do remember him now but never but two and two together. I am still looking for proof of William. I am amiss about emailing the Beara and Kerry Rootsweb because my mother-in-law broke her shoulder and needed surgery. It has been a long haul but she is on her way to a full recovery and now I have a bit more time. I will email them within the next couple of days. Hopefully they will respond and I will contact you when they do.

Hi Kathleen.
I am still up here but leave at 5:00am to return to SC. I had some luck this time, as I found the cemetery and gravesite of my Great Aunt Maggie. Her headstone even included her maiden name!!! By still no luck with GGrandparents.
Intend to email Beara and Kerry as soon as I get back. Hope someone responds. I will email you when I return home. Too bad we couldn't have gotten together when I was here. Maybe next visit??

Absolutely! It would be great to meet. I have been away most of July and I'm now home trying to read mail, throw out mail, pay bills, etc., etc. Fun!
