I'd like any leads enabling me to pursue confirming facts. I'm a novice genealogist using Reunion 9 for Mac software and eager to begin with my great great grandfather. He was born on Oct 22, 1859 in Ray County, MO, USA; married Rose Anne or Rose Annie or Rosanna or Rose Anna Dees in Feb. 8, 1885 in Wedington, AR, USA. They produced seven children, one of whom is my grandfather, Edmund Melvin Johnston, born Oct. 2,1888 in Fresno, CA, USA. How can I confirm the actual names of the two?

Does anyone read these, and can anyone help me?
All good suggestions; thanks. I have been at this now for months after transposing all that older relatives had done with their genealogy methodology prior to this time. I did start with my grandfather back then, but my great grandfather's actual name was the first real question mark in the search to date. What seemed so straightforward at one point now perplexes me and establishes the basis for all the other searches. Regarding family interviews, sadly we waited too long to gather their insights or recollections. What I know about those people is in my own recollections of long ago conversations with my mom or dad.
We crossed lines, I think. My great grandfather's actual name is the issue: Ezra or Esra or Esrey? My grandfather's name is Edmund Melvin Johnston, and he was an orthodontist. I am amazed that you have seen his draft registration card; how did you come across it or any other record? I've never researched anything through Ancestry.com, as I thought it would be the start of a very expensive venture. Am I right? What are your thoughts on the costs of this potential engagement that lies ahead with Ancestry?
GeneJ: You're exactly the kind of resource I hoped to attract with my first question. Thanks for the sage advice and helpful hints. I'll investigate all options. You suggest other sources, like Family History Library; since I'm not LDS, would it be helpful for my family history and could I gain access? Finally, I especially want to thank you for the file of great granddad's draft registration for World War I. How cool is that!

In a query of the Diamond Head Memorial Park in Honolulu, HI, the gravesite registry shows Septer Esrey Johnston. His widow, Rose Annie Dees (Johnston) was in attendance, so she must have provided or confirmed that information. However, I can find no record of that birth name in Ray County, MO for 22 Oct 1859. Any ideas about how to confirm the name with birth identify?
