Judy, glad you liked the comment on the badge for the group. I grew up always saying Johnston with a T and now I say Sorley... s o r l e y.... I can never win.

I am trying to get beyond my Samuel Johnston, born abt 1740, probably in VA or MD, married Olivie (Olle) McCarty abt 1758. Sam and Olle's brother, Daniel, received adjacent land grants in NC on the same day in 1767. The family dropped the "t" and moved to GA at the end of the Revolution. DNA matches put our twig of the Johns(t)on tree in Northern Ireland in the early 1700's and prior to that in Poldean, a small holding in Annandale, SW Scotland.

funny badge...my maiden name was johnston and i remember always having to say johnston...with a t. oh my. years ago on a research trip i found my ggrandfather had changed his name from johnson to johnston. my first reaction was...and i always had to make sure the t was in there. then after reading the probate record...it seems that he went by johnson for most of his adult years and at age 82 decided he wanted to change his name back to johnston..the name he was born with. oh well... i guess the t was always there..

Haven't yet traced my Johnston out of the US - Mary E. Johnston b. 1814 VA/WV, married Samuel B. Keener; d. 1892 Taylor Co., WV. This couple would be my 3rd gr grandparents. Mary was the daughter of Robert Johnston and Mary Vannoy (this info received from another researcher and not verified by me). -cindy

My Johnston's came from Stirlingshire, Scotland. I have seen Criag, Kilsyth and Lanark. They converted to Mormonism and settled in Utah.

My Johnston family, so far, are all from Banff in Scotland. My Great Grandfather had a farm called Craigmancie which I believe is now a horse stud. I'd be interested to hear back from any other Johnston relations from the Banff area. :o)

My Johnston family lived in Bay County, MI, Detroit, MI, and Cleveland, OH. My great-grandfather, Thomas D. Johnston, was a Chiropractor in Cleveland during the early 1900s. He came from County Durham in England.
